Taipei, June 10 (CNA) The government is trying to obtain details on tests conducted by Singapore authorities that found maleic acid in certain Taiwanese food products, after different results for the same products were obtained in Taiwan, an official said Monday.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been trying to contact the Singaporean laboratory responsible for the tests through e-mail, Taiwan's representative in Singapore and the Bureau of Foreign Trade, but no response has been received so far, said Tsai Shu-chen, a division chief at the FDA.

Tsai said the maleic acid detected in some Taiwanese food products might have occurred naturally during the manufacturing process, and that the FDA wanted to know what test methods were used by Singapore.

The chemical was detected recently in popular Taiwanese food products such as rice noodles, hotpot ingredients and tapioca balls. The substance has been traced to a modified starch containing maleic anhydride, a chemical used in the production of food packing materials.

As of June 7, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore had ordered the recalls of 18 starch-based food products from Taiwan after they were detected to contain trace amounts of maleic acid.

Among the items were four noodle products made by Sun Chi Foods Industrial Co.

The company, however, said it has not used any modified starches in its noodle products, and tests conducted the FDA on those products did not detect any maleic acid.
