Hey Guys,

I am planning a trip to Mai Sai sometime in April. Would need some info on the area...especially on transport and accomadation. Is there any bus service which provides transport from Chang Rai Airport to Mae Sai directly? Or is there any other public transport that i can take from Chang Rai Airport?

Cheers

Ic...so is the bus station far from the airport and does the bus services there states their destination in English? With my limited vocab of thai and poor sense of direction, i might just hop into a wrong bus and ended up somewhere else.

Map of Chiangrai

Hi bro Hakoshu,

You are the man. Where did you get this map from? I am actually collecting maps from all types of different source. Especially those in .pdf or as picture files as I could easily stored them into my PDA and can read it when to. Certainly lighten up my load when I go for independent travelling. We can exchange if you have more of them.

For the benefits of the another bro here,

So far, I had travelled from Chiang Rai Bus terminal to Mae Sai, but had not tried it from the Airport. From the Chiang Rai Bus Terminal, you could easily take those green colour mini bus for less than S$1 (I think is about 20bahts) to Chiang Rai. Took about an hour or slightly bus.

For your info, in Mae Sai, it is just a small little border town. There is a sign-board saying that it is the most northern point of Thailand. Good for photo-taking. I shall suggest some places to explore within Mae Sai and around Mae Sai.

Within Mae Sai,
There are some stalls selling all type of things near the custom area. At night, all these stalls will be closed. But I like to come out to enjoy the cool breeze and having some hot noodle at those roadside stall along the road leading to the custom. There are some massage and karaoke place you can explore and there are some young gals (be careful as some are underage) inside those joints where you take the gals out or have the service inside. Generally cost 1500B - can last for FT.

There is a disco called BM about one to two kilometres away from the custom. Ask around for direction.

In the morning, you can go up a hill where you can see the border between Mae Sai and Myanmar's Tacheilek. Quite a view from there. Be prepare to climb up the hill to enjoy the view. My advice is not to take the staircase but go up by the road at the right. When going to the foot of the hill, there is a temple and you can explore the local masan malah along the way. Quite busy in the day. You could find Thai and Burmaese mixing around here. Look out for a sweet young gal manning one of the 2 photo-copying stalls beside the custom. I find her quite sweet looking and cute although she is quite young.

Around Mae Sai,
Generally, I find the attraction of Mae Sai lies what is around it. First thing is that you could go over to the Myanmar's border town of Tacheilek to explore the busy border trade. Cost about 350 bahts (100bahts at Thai side, 250 bahts at Myanmar side) to cross over the custom. Note that it is only for one day visa only. Must be back to Thai side, I think by 1800hrs. Also note that there is a half-hour difference between the 2 sides. You can apply for up to 2 weeks visa where you could go to Kengtung, and in theory to Meng La which is the border town at Myanmar with China.

Mae Sai and Chiang Rai are connected by a highway where u see some nice scenery when u are in the bus. You could explore Doi Tung (Thai King's mother's villa) which I heard is very nice. In addition, there are some caves to explore along the highway. Had to know where to drop at the highway and walk in. Can visit the Tham Pla which is a cave where u can see water pond beside the cave. Seem to be connected to the cave through underground tunnels. You can find fish swimming inside. You could not go deep into the cave. (Pla stand for fish in Thai). There is another one called Tham Luang which is supposed to be quite big inside. Be prepared to go there early, with some comfortable clothing and shoe and with an extra powerful torchlight. You could hire some gas lantern there to guide u along. Certainly for the adventurous.

Another place to explore, and can stay for the night is Mae Salong. This is the place which is feature in the Taiwanese movie starring the singer Wang Jie. It talk about when in 1949 when the Communist Chinese win over the Nationalist Chinese. While most of the Nationalist Chinese escape to Taiwan, there is an army group that was based in Yunnan province that had to escape to Myanmar. From there they are forced and settle near the Thai-Myanmar border. While there, some of them grow opium so that they can buy weapon and intend to overthrow the Communist China from there. Of course it fail and now most of them hold Thai passport. The Thai King and his mother persudes them to grow tea instead of opium and lay down their weapons and could get Thai citizenship. When there, you could chat with them in Chinese while having some nice Chinese tea and food while admiring the sakura. (there are sakura there because of the cold weather). You could explore some of the miniorities tribes living further down the mountain. e.g the Akha tribe.

The Golden Triangle is also quite near from Mae Sai. Can go there through the town of Chiang Saen.

For accomodation, for about 1100 bahts (can bargain down), you could stay at the most luxurious hotel in Mae Sai. The hotel name is Wang Tong Hotel where at the balcony, offer a superb view to Myanmar. Alternately, you could stay at a few guesthouses near the custom. Based on the direction facing the custom. Wang Tong Hotel is at the right hand side of the custom. A small road led to the hotel. At the right hand side, along the road is Top North Hotel which I think should be able to get for 500 bahts per night. Further to the left hand side, you could find a lot of guesthouse. Personally, I quite like this guesthouse called S-house. Very comfortable, for about 600bahts. To go to this guest house, when walking along the road at the left of the custom, the guesthouse is located at the top of a slope. Not very high though. Send my regards to this friendly Uncle Jack where he open a small restaurant opp. S-house. A friendly guy who speak good english.

I went there for about 2 times and have some friends there. For any more info., just ask it here.

Wow, your information very detailed. :) I also went there before a couple of times. Just wanna check some stuff with you as might be going up again soon.

Is there public transport from the airport in the form of a public bus to Maesai? or to Chiang Rai Bus Terminal? I did not notice any such service at the Airport. Only saw rental cars, taxis, private cars. Nothing else.

Where are these massage and karaoke places located? Did not see many around when I was there last year. What's FT anyway?

There is a disco called BM about one to two kilometres away from the custom. Ask around for direction.
Any happening stuff here?

Hakoshu
25-02-2005, 06:12 AM
BM = Batman Disco, hehe, Not a bad disco.. Most of the teens would go there
Happening at certain times.. I heard weekday would be dead.. I enjoy going to the roadside stall too.. Everynight there is a mini pasa malam stall around the streets.. Be sure to grab some bargains in the night market!!

As for hotels, the only decent ones i see and i would stay is Wang Tong Hotel.. Costs ard 900 Baht for standard room if remember correctly..The Wang Tong hotel did, however, have a fabulous all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for 100 baht. Included coffee or tea, but a soda was extra. This was a good deal and you did not have to be a hotel guest to participate. They had a dessert table that had bowls of these little things that looked like artificial plastic fish bait. I tried one and it was awful (I wonder how they can eat that - but I guess it’s better than the fried bugs I’ve seen elsewhere).

There is Quite a number of pubs and ktvs there.. Not sure abt how happening is there as tat time was with my gf there.. Gems and stones are popular there.. If i'm not wrong.. There is quite a few red light district there too..
Behind wang tong, there is one streets of ktvs.. When I was taking a tour of Tachilek the guy peddling the bicycle offered me some “Pooying.” I did not take him up on it as I was rather uncomfortable with Burma, but now I may be regretting the decision.

Is there public transport from the airport in the form of a public bus to Maesai?

There is no bus service from the airport as such. The bus route plies between CR and Mae Sai on the main road (thanon phaholyothin) some distance (definitely not walking distance) from the airport. You can flag down the bus when you are on Phaholyothin but it is a non-airconditioned bus.

To get to the main raod, I guess you can get a taxi and stop at the nearest town (maybe 2-3 km from airport). The town is called Bandu and hosts the Rajabhat Institute (one of the 2 universities in CR province, the other being near Mae Chan on the way to Mae Sai) - just tell the taxi driver Rajabhat, Bandu. The bus should stop at the entrance arch to the university.

Make sure you get on the bus going in the right direction!!

Haha, Rajabhat Institute is the University that my Dancer studied at before she graduated this year. Yes, one can certainly get the bus at Rajabaht. Or go to Talat Bandu (Bandu Market) - nearer cos on the way to Rajabaht from airport. Can flag down the bus just after 7/11. Once the bus (or taxi) exits from the airport make sure it turns RIGHT (left will go to Chiangrai city but you want go in the opposite direction). If u need help, there a photoshop just next to 7/11 on the right. The owner is a nice bespectacle 40-ish Chinese lady and you can ask her in English. If you speak Thai, can ask the girl(s) at the Handphone stall outside the shop. They are very friendly.

BTW, I have seen my gal taken a bus (more like a covered pickup) from the airport to Bandu/Rajabaht. Dun think it is frequent at all though

Also. there is quite a nice pub I visited once in Mae Chan. Got a couple of hot lady singers on stage. Remember how Dancer used to tease me and ask "Suai mai?" Always replied "Suai maak, dtae kit waa kun suai gwaa" (really it's true ;) )

P.S. If u think shopping in CR (or BKK) is cheap, wait till u walk across the border into Myanmar. Be prepared to be "attacked" by the hawkers though - the 1st few you see will offer u things u think are dirt cheap; hangon. U ain't seen what is cheap yet. Go in a little further and pretend to show interest in some of things they tried to show u (assuming u really like). Soon a group will surround u and just wait and hear their offered price drop. Only one thing I hated - the border police at the Myanmar side really made me felt like a "Robert", with that look on their face. Yes, they seemed pleased to see me, cos I had to pay a much higher border pass fee (I vaguely remembered 250baht versus 20 or something like that) than the Thai locals cos I am SGrean. Even though I didn;t bring my passort, only IC, they still allow!

And don't forget to bring along a plastic bag each for your ride up and down to Mae Salong.

It's to contain your vomit and not dirty the car. :D

Thaivisitor’s Annual Samsters Trip to Hatyai!

.

Hi bro thaivisitor,
u are right. At that time, on the way up the Mae Salong, I nearly vomit...although the view is nice...my advice is to sit in the front. Another tip, for those people who are not intending to stay overnight at Mae Salong, and wish to see as much things as possible, it is advice to come down from the mountain at about 4pm or earlier. Any later, u had to stay there overnight. If u want to go to the way up, u had to wait at a place along the main road between the Mae Sai and Chiang Rai city. I forgot how to describe the stop, had to ask the friendly bus conductor in the bus to remind u to drop u down at the stop that will take u up to Mae Salong. The small green little bus had a bus conductor inside. normally they are quite friendly. Just tell them "bai mae salong" (to Mae Salong).

I remember the stop is in between 2 shops, both selling food and some tibets. Good to buy some water or food here before going up. I remember the songthew will bring us up for the price of about 50 bahts each. (maybe the price is wrong..any bros to correct me?) The whole songthew can carry about 8 persons....so it will be about 400 bahts for the whole songthew. At that time, we wait for about half an hour for the 8th person to arrive. I dun want to wait too long. So I discuss with the other travellers (i dun know them at first) what about divide the total cost (assuming 400 bahts) and divide by 7 person and give it to the driver. As we wait quite long, they agree. With my half-fuck thai, I talk to the driver and he agree. For the driver, as long as he got the full amount, he will agree. If u only one person, and no one is around, u can book the whole songthew. I did take the whole songthew back alone at half price of 200 bahts as all the other travellers are staying over night. As I did not bring my gear, so I cannot stay overnight, and I had to go back to Mae Sai.

No, it's off a major road although you need to drive or take a taxi. It is maybe 15 minutes drive from Chiang Rai south on the way to Phan (the next town).

There is an art gallery there as well - the principal donor of the funds required to build this temple is a Thai artist. He does airbursh work I believe.

Thanks. The pics are beautiful.

Brings back fond memories of The White Temple (http://www.pbase.com/jdb/image/26757648). I can still remember the Artist was still painting the big mural (picture) of Buddha on the wall when I visited the unfinished temple with my Dancer, and he told us about his inspiration to do the painting. We saw the completed picture on a piece of paper and the divided it into squares and had drawn "similar squares" on the wall. Glad for that experience to meet with the man himself.

Hi all Kind Bros,

I had read through all this information on Mae Sai and would be making my virgin trip in Early June. (alone unless any brothers interested to join in?)

Date: 8th June to 12th June 2005

Need advise from u all.

I was quote $450 using thai airway to Bangkok and transit to ChiangRai. Is this price acceptable? Or brothers got better suggestion?

Alternatively, i will take a flight to Chiangmai and i understand that there is no coach/bus from airport to Mae Sai, pls kindly advise me the best way to Mae Sai from Chiangmai.

BTW, i speak no thai.

If i want to enter Tachileh and stay there for a couple of days, How am i going to apply the permits and how much do i need to pay?

Thx in advance and your advise is much appreciated.

I am going there to visit my gf.

Happy,
Bro TRick

Alternatively, i will take a flight to Chiangmai and i understand that there is no coach/bus from airport to Mae Sai, pls kindly advise me the best way to Mae Sai from Chiangmai.

If i want to enter Tachileh and stay there for a couple of days, How am i going to apply the permits and how much do i need to pay?

Happy,
Bro TRick

You can fly by Air Asia to Chiang Rei via Bangkok. It cost me around $130 one way to get me from Singapore to Chiang Rei and another 600B for the Taxi from Chiang Rei airport to MaeSai.

You can book the 3.30pm ticket to Bangkok and follow by 7.30pm ticket to Chiang Rei.

I stay in Wang Tong Hotel for 900B per day.

Not sure about applying the visa to Tachileik but I do visit there when i was in Mae Sai and I pay US$5 for a day pass to visit Tachileik. No need to pay any thing at the Thailand custom site.

here are some of the photo that I took at the Golden Triangler

For Tachileik, you dun think you need to convert to FEC. I think in Myanmar, there is an option not to convert to FEC even if you arrive in Yangon. Must get the right visa though, I think the normal tourist visa dun need to convert.

As for the day visa to stay in Tachileik, there is another visa which allow you to stay there (I think so), up to 2 weeks. Normally, traveler use that visa to travel to Kengtung. Could be a good idea for your gf and u to go to around, to Kengtung too. There is not much to see at Tachileik. Unlesss you want to explore the ayam farm there. hehehe.

If you just stay in Tachileik, just use Thai bahts. No need to convert to US dollars. I dun see Kyat being used there. Everything is in Thai bahts.

For your info, once you had cross the Myanmar custom, and pass those people who want you to join their short tours, you will come to a round-about. There is a sign which I think is written "City of the Golden Triangle" and you will see a big Tiger Beer poster in front. Observe the surrounding and you will see a lot of shops. For your info, a lot of the owners of the shop are Chinese and can speak Chinese very well. Their worker might not as they could be Burmaese, but the boss is Chinese. You can ask them questions if you need some helps. They are quite friendly people.

Hope that it really helps.

As an aside, I was in Mae Sai more than 10 years ago on a drive around in my hired jeep.

Noticed that there were many pretty ladies crossing over on their honda motobikes carrying a small bag and they all head to one of the hotels on the Thai side and go up the elevators.

My feeling was that these were Burmese girls coming over to serve Thai clients who check into the hotel on the Mae Sai Thai side of the border. Anyone knows about this?

I spent most of my day in the Mai Sai Resort drinking beer and just lazing around as I was not much of a cheongster then.

Hi,

Kengtung should not be more than 200 km north of Tachiliek. It is around half-way between Tachiliek and Mong La. Mong La is a border town on the Myanmar side with China at the other side. Heard that Mong La is quite a sleazy town. Used to has gals and casino to attract the wealthy Chinese across the border to come over to gamble. But few year ago, there is a big crackdown. I dun know the status now. Any bros here who is going to Kengtung, and might want to visit Mong La, please update yours finding here. But take note, you might need to obtain permit at Kengtung if going to Mong La. And I heard that as it is not for international traveller. Only those Chinese and Burmaese can go through the custom here. Any bros here who can clarify on this ?

Just met up with my colleague's brother who stay in Yangon and ask him a few question about the above issue.

1. Passport can only apply at Yangon. Don't trust any body who said they can apply the passport else where unless you are brave enough to pass him your money.

2. As for the different in cost for applying the passport, it is due to the under table money and whether or not your GF holds Myanmar IC. He pay less then S$100 to get his passport. if you GF can speak and write burmese and hold Myanmar IC, that will be the cheapest. Otherwise you need pay some FINE to do the work.

Of cause if you got no lobang and don't speak Burmese. You will be paying the most

Relating to Myanmar Passport.. I know of a girl who just recently applied for one. Total cost was about 60,000B, this was inclusive of accomodation in Yagoon, air ticket to Yagoon, paid for a guide and of course the passport. The whole process took about 2 weeks and she actually had a guide from the thai myanmar embassy.

My wife is from Kengtung, so this is from her...

If your girl was a WL b4, then it is highly unlikely this is true. The reason is simple:
1) If she is going to school in Yangon, it is assumed she is going to the University, which means she must have study as least until high school in keng tung. If so not many of these girls actually become WL
2) If she has education already.. and is a WL, then this job is 20 times better paying than any job she can hope to find even with 1st class honors in Myanmar. Further, Shan people is unlikely to get good post in govt or business jobs...

Sanity Check:
- Can she speak and write english? If she cannot, she have not been to school.. school in Myanmar had english as core subject (ex british colony like us)
- Can she speak and write Burmese? if cannot, again never been to school.
- Ask her which school is she going, at least she must know the name...

Sound like she is trying to hint you not to call and most of all not to go find her... by spinning this story.

Hi bro Trick,

Are u referring to the Thai side or the Tachileik side ? In the Tachileik side, if you want really near to the border, there is a hotel called Golden Triangle Hotel. It is located on top of a small hill just at the round-about. From the web, it seem that a 3-star hotel, costing US$43. But I think you can get better rate there if you are there.

Another one i saw is called Maekhong River View Hotel a few kilometres (I think less than 2 kilometres) from the border. Actually quite near. If you take their taxi - like those Thailand's pickup taxi called songthew, it is just a few minutes away. It is just like typically 3-star hotel, with its own restaurant, massage centre. At that time, i just look around and they show me the place - the facilities. Very friendly staff. But i find the hotel a bit dark. In fact, I find that the Burmaese shop are always so dark, especially in the day. Dun know why.

For your info., opposite this hotel is a short lane, with many prostitute houses inside.

Hi Bro Trick,

I remember that I did ask before but I forget liao. If I remember, should be in the 1500 bahts region.

I went to check on the Regina Golf and Country Club. They do provide free shuffle transfer service from Chiang Rai airport. And when I check the rate, it is just 1500 bahts for a superior rooms. If I not wrong, this hotel is quite near to the Allure Hotel standard. These 2 hotels are the hotels with casinos inside. This Regina look not bad. I visit the long-necked tribes which was hired by them to show-case to the tourist. There is also a golf range and other facilities like spa too. If you stay there, hope that you can visit the spa there and provide a FR. In fact, hope that you can provide us a FR there after you are back in Singapore. Refer to their website which also show the rates for the crossing of the border. Quite detail info.

Actually, I know a Thai gal who stay in Mae Sai and her mother owe a karaoke shop there. Her elder sis married a Malaysian as a second wife. I know there 2 sister quite well and has a good impression of the younger sister. Although the karaoke offers gals for sex, it seems that she is not involved in the shop. When I was there, she will just involve in the singing session. I guess that she has no choice as she lives above the karaoke and they are owe by her mum. She herself work in Doi Tung - the King's Queen Mother's villa near Mae Sai.

Hope that got chance to visit there. Guess that no chance to be with her as distance is a problem.

I have just came back from KengTung-Tachilek-Maesai. Here's some information that I find useful to provide for bros who are thinking of visiting these places in the future.

To cross over to Tachilek from Maesai
US$5 or 250baht for a single day entry
US$10 or 500baht for 2 weeks entry and allowable to travel until KengTung only

* Passport will be kept at the Custom and a temporary VISA will be given for people travelling into Myanmar via Maesai.

* There is no need to exchange FEC from Maesai to Myanmar.

* For Singaporean who have already apply VISA in SG through the Myanmar Embassy, a maximum of 1 month is allowed in Myanmar and the passport will not be kept at the custom. The 1 month VISA can be allowed to travel to anywhere in Myanmar and out of Myanmar. The VISA cost SGD$35.

* 50 baht will be charged by the "tour consultant" at the Tachilek border who will fill up the VISA form on your behalf. The "tour consultant" understands and speak english.
-----------------------------------------------"-------------------------------
Returning from Maesai
For those bros who are taking bus at Maesai-Tachilek (Town) border to the Maesai bus station, can wait along the road side for "Red TukTuk". It only cost 7 baht to travel to the bus station. And from the Maesai bus station, can take bus to Chiangmai, Chiangrai, BKK etc for flight to SG.

For other enquires, can either ask me in the forum or pm me.

Quite detail info.

http://www.regina-tk.com/english/sc.asp#bfee

Rimkok resort is one of the best resorts in chiang rai. Excellent breakfast - has a BIG garden. Deluxe rooms from 1800Baht++

Location's abit off though but should be alright if you drive. Like me. :D

Bro lucifier,

Quote
Another one i saw is called Maekhong River View Hotel a few kilometres (I think less than 2 kilometres) from the border. Actually quite near. If you take their taxi - like those Thailand's pickup taxi called songthew, it is just a few minutes away. It is just like typically 3-star hotel, with its own restaurant, massage centre. At that time, i just look around and they show me the place - the facilities. Very friendly staff. But i find the hotel a bit dark. In fact, I find that the Burmaese shop are always so dark, especially in the day. Dun know why.

May i know the rate of this hotel and compare to the standard at Wang Tong hotel at Mae Sai, are they on par?

thx alot bro.

cheers,
Bro TRick

1500Baht per night. I would say 3 star service. Very ex. Hotel keeps 2000Baht as deposit in case "you break or damage anything". Quoted by the staff....extra towels - pay money. Anyway, FOR ANY EXTRA (exd girls) you got to pay money......HIGHLY not recommended............

I suggest you go to REGINA hotel. Good hotel, cheaper, better standard but further from custom but nearer to their BOOM BOX "So called" disco by the locals......try the superwine - it's nice....mades you mabok and wanna dance! Oh, BTW, the disco upstairs provides both ST and LT service. Never check rates though - my tirak around.!

That was not the case each time I travelled to Kengtung (I call it Jintung). I had my passport with the Myanmar stamp on it.

thaivisitor :D

Hi bro thaivisitor,

Thanks for the information. Hope to clarify some things about the passport/visa issue. This apply only to the day trip (one day visa at Tachileik), according to my experience. This might apply to the 2 week visa or those who apply the visa in sillypore beforehand.

Option 1: Leaving your passport at the Thai custom.

Step 1: At the photocopy booth
This is quite a common way as seen from the crowd outside the photocopy booth near the Thai custom at Mae Sai. You pay a few bahts to photocopy your passport. The page with your photo attached. Look out for one young and beautiful gal who manned the booth. She normally wear those Thai university uniform. Look kawaii. (cute)

Step 2: At the Thai custom
After paying the 100 bahts to the custom. Deposit your passport at the Thai custom. They will give u some sort of "receipt" for that. Dun lost that as u might not get your passport back if u lost it. They will stamp the exit stamp on the photocopy version (A4 size paper) of the passport. Note that there will be no stamp on your actual passport.

Step 3: At the Myanmar custom
You present the photocopy version of the passport for the entrance stamp. You paid 250 bahts here. There you go at Tacheilek - the City of the Golden Triangle and the first thing that will greet you will be the touts asking you to join their short tour at the trishaw or moto-trishaw.

Option 2: Bringing your passport with you.

Step 1: No need to go to the photocopy booth. Straight to Thai custom. Present your passport for the exit stamp and pay the 100 bahts. Those who took these options could be either:
1. those on visa run - those who want to extend your stay in Thailand. Remember that once u exit Thailand, and re-enter Thailand at the end of the day (or maybe one hour), you had 30 more days visa at Thailand. Certainly cheaper that extending at the Bangkok immigration centre.
2. those who want to have the stamp at the passpert for souvenier. To show others that you had enter Myanmar maybe.

Step 2: At the Myanmar custom
Same as the previous option, including the 250 bahts. The only difference is that they stamp on your passport instead on the paper.

Further tips:
1. You could buy a A4 version (normal white paper) of the Tachileik map near the Myanmar custom.
2. For those who just want to visit Tachileik for the day, walk around the market just after the custom. There are a lot of DVD at 100 bahts (or cheaper)
3. Can take those moto-trishaw (or those non-motor-trishaw) to go around Tachileik (within 5km radius). Be sure to bargain.
4. For those who like rock songs, there is a lot of "live concert DVD" of bands e.g. Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine. About 100 bahts.

Warning:
1. For those smoker: you might be tempted to buy those 100bahts (if i remember correctly) per carton (10 packs x 20 sticks) offers by the touts. Dun buy from them. They might open one pack for u to sample. That might be the only real pack as the other pack in the carton will be fake. Those Marlboro will be those make in Myanmar with the inferior quality. In addition, u could not bring in more than 2 cartons of cigerattes back to Thailand or else u will be fined heavily. Imagine paying for fake cigeratte and heavy fine. More expensive than in Sillypore.
2. Those mobile touts asking u to buy restricted VCDs. You will notice that after u buy them ,the actual VCD u bought will be different from what they had shown u before as they had switch it beforehand. Be careful. If want to buy, buy from those numerous shops. Just ask the shop owner and they will bring u to the back.

Hope my info. helps. Please up my points if u think i deserve it. Thanks.

That was not the case each time I travelled to Kengtung (I call it Jintung). I had my passport with the Myanmar stamp on it.

You can only take a taxi from Tachilek to KengTung. The Taxi driver will need to filled up a form with all those on board his taxi. Along the way, he has to stop for periodic checks whereby the authorities will check (although always not physically) to make sure that the names correspond with the passengers. No one is allowed to drop off or board halfway.

The journey from Tachilek to Kengtung is double the normal usage time due to the terrible road conditions.

Along the journey, you can see some natives in their traditional clothes whereby people use to pay to take pictures with them in Thailand. There's also a very large hotspring but unfortunately, the Myanmese doesn't know how to capitalise on that.

In Kengtung, the so-called only attraction would be a large "Kuan Im" statute. Other than that, if you have no girlfriend with you, you have to PCC.

Oh! you can also visit a master there. He's call the "master with a hat" because he's always wearing a hat. He has helped a lot of people all over the world especially Asain and you can see the amount of gifts he has from them. Enough to open a shop.

The government only provide electicity to houses one day per month by rotation. When a particular house will have electricity is not fixed. So if a family is not at home when their house electricity, too bad. The rich will of course have their own generator.

Hotels are quite nicely built. There's only a few of them. They charge foreigners by per head, not per room, so don't go sharing with your frined in the same room. It's normally US$10.00 per head. Electricity in hotels (by generator) are only switch on during the evening about 7.00 pm to night about 11.00 pm. I remembered asking the hotel staff whether there is hot water for bathing, and she replied yes, showing me where the hot water tap is, but the fucking electricity is not on.

The owner and his family normally stays in a house beside the hotel (within the same compound). They will have a TV set in their house which controls all the channels in the hotel TVs. So you can imagine watching the TV in the hotel and sudeenly the channel keep changing because some fucking kid in the house keeps changing the channel according to what he/she wants to see.

If you need to stay, stay only for a night and get to Mongla or wherever you want to go or you might die of boredom there.

Cheers
thaivisitor :D

Hi bro thaivisitor,

Me again. Just need to clarify with you on your trips. Really appreciate your helps.

1. How long is the journey from Tachileik to Kengtung? How much did u pay for the taxi? Where did u book the taxi? Heard that the scenery along these route is very nice. Is it true?

2. What does that master do? Medical or fortune telling? Might want to visit him.

3. Where did u stay in Kengtung? Can tell me more on the cheong scene from what u had observed. I understand you had your tirak with you. Is the Shan gals there suay jing jing?

4. Do u have any knowledge of the trip to Mongla. What is the procedure. Is it possible for us to go anywhere in Myanmar after Kengtung or Mongla. Is there any limitation. Heard that there is a rule is that "From where we come from, we must exit from there". E.g. is if we enter by Tachileik, we must exit from there too. Cannot enter by Tachileik, travel around Myanmar, then back to Sillypore by plane from Yangon.

Really appreciate your help.

The last time I was there, everyone leaving Thailand (angmos, etc) took their passports along with them and left for Tachileik. Din see anyone leaving their passport behind at the Thai custom.

Even on a 1 day visit to Tachileik, the passport is kept by the Myanmar immigration and returned upon your departure.

I do not think that the passport is kept by the Myanmar. From my experience, it is kept by the Thai for the option 1. By the way, do you observe about 2 photocopy booths outside the Thai customs. I believe that the angmo and the others u seen might be going for a visa run to extend their stay in Thailand. For this method, they need to have the stamp on their passport. I had personnally tried the 2 options. On the last time I cross the border, the Thai custom officer insists that I photocopy my passport but I told them I want the stamp on my passport and they understand and let my passport to be stamp.

The photocopy version is useful (I think) for those Thai who do business at the Tachileik and need to go there often. If everytime they go to Tachileik and had to stamp their passport, the passport will be completed in no times. Maybe those Thai cusotm officer though I am a Thai. (in fact I look like one, with my dark complexation)

TWhat is this 100 baht for? Din encounter this as well.

Refer to this website - http://www.regina-tk.com/english/sc.asp#bfee

It is referred to as Thai immigration fee. Maybe they know I am doing a visa run and this is a fee for that. I not sure. You are lucky that you dun need to pay that 100 bahts. Maybe if you follow a tour guide in, u dun need to pay for that. Can anyone here verify these.

Thanks.

I seriously do not know how much as my biz partner paid for the taxi but I guess it should be within affordable range. There are many taxis in Tachilek. If you do not know any, just asked around and you'll be able to get one. The journey takes about half a day depending on the "standard" of the taxi. Sceneries are very subjective. Some may enjoy it, some not.

More on fortune telling type. In addition to normal details, you also need to know the day you were born. eg. Friday.

I stayed in a hotel, quite big as far as kengtung standard is concerned. Cannot remember the name, only that it all all wooden, kind of like a resort look. I cannot observe any cheong scene in Kengtung. Yes, Shan girls are suay jing jing, but there are also bad lookers too lah. And NBzzz, when I was there, I did not have my tirak with me leh..

Rules are set by the authorities manning the place. Money talks too, Generally, under normal circumstances, you can go to Mongla from Kengtung. There are some areas which you cannot go even if you want to pay "extra" so basically, the taxi will be able to know.

There is no rule that you have to exit from Tachilek if you enter from there. Just make sure you have your passport with the valid stamps. When I was there, there was a group of Singaporeans who entered thru Tachilek and made their way to Rangoon and fly to Singapore from Rangoon too.

By the way, getting to rangoon from Tachilek or the nearby provinces by road is near impossible. You will need to fly to Rangoon.

If you want more accurate information, I can refer you to a friend in Maesai who basically travels in and out of Myanmar and was also the one who brought me there to see the master. She has both countries legal citizenship.

Oh! Don't bother to have any dieas, she's 50 already. :D

Hi bro thaivisitor,

Really appreciate your effort in answering my question. Really the ultimate appreciate that. I really believe in the money talks thing here. One thing for the difficulty in moving from one place to another in Myanmar beside the transport infrastructure is the rebels presence. As some part are under rebel's control, the Myanmar government cannot guarantee your personal safety and that is one of the reason they always advise you to fly instead by land.

To me, I prefer to explore by land as you can see more thing. Anyway, when u travel, the most important aspect of it might not be the destination itself, it should be journey.

Let see how is my work schedule. I would really want to try the Mae Sai - Tachielik - Kengtung - Mongla - anywhere in Myanmar. Will post as much info. here as possible here once I had make that trip. I enjoy sharing my travel experience with all the bros here.

Thaivisitor, maybe we can exchange contact and meet up and share our travel experience. Any bros here who are interested can join us too.

Thanks.

Well, maybe its different for you. My friend's experience and my own experience crossing the border, we held onto our passports leaving Thailand, and deposited the passports at Myanmar Immig.

Thai Nationals who go to Tachileik Myanmar to do business do not need a passport. There is a border agreement between the 2 govts to allow their people to move freely between the 2 countries to do trade using a border pass for Myanmar and a piece of document on the Thailand side. The 100 baht would apply to the Thais, not the conventional passport holders.

Maybe they have different standards, depending on their mood.I think it is more dangerous for the Myanmar side to keep our passport.

But I feel that they are more friendly toward Singapore than those ang-mo. When crossing the custom, they ask me where i from, i told them from Singapore and they let me through w/o hassle. Behind me is an ang-mo. Some more the ang-mo greet them hello in Burmaese (mi-la-ga-pa) and yet they had check his bag. They did not check my bags for the few times I had cross the border.

It shouldn't be kept by any of the immigrations if you intend to stay overnight and travel further in. It should be with you at all times.

That's my experience.

The area I "declared" to the Myanmar immig I was travelling is Tachileik, and returning to Thailand via the same check point. So they kept my passport and issued me a Pink Card.

The officer did tell me before, if I wanted to leave Myanmar via Yangon, or move on to China border etc, then to let them know. I guess arrangements would be different in that kind of case.

usd10 for overnight visa 14 days. usd25 for business visa 1 mth. or u keep renewing lar.
it is true that yr passport will be kept by immigration if u enter via tachilek. it is also not possible to venture further than tachilek should u hold a standard visa. only way is to enter illegally via maesai, you have to take a motor ride that is 45mins round about the main custom gate. then u can take a plane out from tachilek that prolly cost about 200 should u want to fly into cambodia, illegally again. not advisable though. u can get killed inside. :p

Hi All

This is a 1 month plus late report (went there 1st to 5th Sept 2006).....
Initially had contacted Uncle Benny (Thread Starter) to show me around, but sad thing he MIA about two weeks before by trip there. End up i not have an enjoyable trip there...

Day 1
Travel time from S'pore Changi Airport to Wang Thong Hotel(Maesai) : 3.00pm to 9.45pm (S'pore time).
I took Thai Airways, the transist btw International & domestic flight was very smooth, comming back also. Have anyone took budget flight before? Iam wondering if the transistion is also smooth as when you alight there are personnels and signboards to direct you to the next flight.

While traveling in the domestic flight over Changmai, saw there were lots of thunders within the clouds (i was prepared with umberella & windbreaker in case). But luckly when i arrived in Changrai the weather was OK, the following days were very hot actually.

As i took the hotel van to Maesai the road was very quiet, no activity at all (around 9pm S'pore). In between we drove past 3 road checks was wondering why so much security (bcos of Mayanmar ??)

It took about 1 hrs drive &i reached the hotel.Once there even the Hotel seems deserted!! Only the Bell guy, reception guy and me!!! I ask the bell guy why no no one around, and he said usually people will come only in the weekends (i reached on Friday night). But actually throughout my stay there i counted not more than 10 foriegn tourist were moving around the hotel at that time.

Up the hotel, hey i got a double bed (i placed for a single bed actually), but i kept quiet and just took the room. I went down the streets later, but it was damn deserted & i wasnt familar around so just went to a nearby 7eleven to buy mineral water & went straight back to hotel. On the way back saw a MTV lounge (but didnt go in) along the street to Wang Thong.....

Day2 In Maesai
At the second day i got sooo bored i joined the hotel's sight seeing for 1600baht to Doi Tung, Golden Traingle and Chiang Saen for 4hours.

At the Doi Tung Royal Villa was the only place that was cooler during my whole trip as it is at a higher ground. (See the pics posted in Maesai photo) I paid around 150baht for all the enterence if i remember correctly.
The Mae fah luang garden was purely scenery viewing. The Princess Mother Commemorative Hall is actually a living house of the princess & many of the rooms were actually out of bounce and you have to take of your shoes when you go in. The plus point is that there is actually a guide that follows you to show you around the house. There were about 4 or 5 of them, a cute guide who is able to speak english showed me around. She's about 20 i think, and kept giggling when i asked a question which she didnt get what i meant. Whole of the trip she gave me the deepest impression...
Golden Triangle was a shopping cum sight seeing area, Chiang Saen.... i didnt mange to go as i spend too long time at the 1st two places. Actually if you want to enjoy slowy the places i think go two places a day would be more appropriate as you have to take account the traveling time.

3rdDay

I went into Mayanmar, and believe it or not, i kept my passport(no VISA) with me throughout. Come to think of it i was very lucky not to have been checked and when i told the officers, they just smiled and chop my passport for me. Otherwise i may be even detained by the Thai or Mayanmar offcers for illegal entry.
I entered around afternoon, when through the Thai custom, and they chop the departure stamp. As i walked in from the left side of the road to Mayanmar, a small kid point to me to walk to the right side of the road. So i followed, he then asked for some money in Thai(i think). As he helped directed me, so gave him some coins. Then iam about to go to the Mayanmar check point, there were two paths, one along the road another away from the road. I saw many people took the path away from the road so i followed (WRONG!!! Foreigners suppose to go into a room to chop their passport that was at the path along the road). As i walked on i see the people(Thais if im not wrong) showing a guard a piece of paper as they went into Mayanmar. When i reached the guard & i showed him my passport he just waved me to go in.... and i blurr blurr went into Mayanmar without knowing i didnt chop my passport going into another country.
As i went in many touters came to ask me want to tour around for 100baht. I said no, they then ask if i want lady, i said no also. Throughout my trip there, i kept being asked this 2 questions & also viaegra and porn VCDs. Later a english speaking guy offered to bring me around, so i went along. Afterwhich, i still paid him 100baht:o after that since he took me around as i wasnt sure around. Near the border have also alot of pasamalam type stalls and many selling Vcds, DVDs amd MP3 musics.
Later in the day when i went back i walked on the right side of the road to Maesai. Then i saw a sign( i cant remember what was written), it directed me to cross the road and into the room (thats right, the custom room that i was suppose to go in before going into Mayanmar !!!) As i went in still very blurr, was asked to show passport then asked to pay 500baht. They then asked me to sit in front of the PC with camera. took my photo and printout together in a pass. They then told me " Your passport we keep, this is your temp pass, enjoy your trip in Mayanmar ".
WHAT!!! Iam suppose to be going back to Thailand what????
I told them that im actually going back, luckly the officer just simled at me and chop Entry and Departure in my passport, and i proceeded to go to the Thai checkpoint and went back to Hotel safe and sound... a memberable first trip to Mayanmar .
The third day.... i flew back to Singapore....
The end....

bro, where's the swimming pool located????

swimming pool is "hidden". It is located excatly opposite the best hotel in town. wang thong. costs abt 900baht double bed with horrible breakfast...best hotel in tachilek costs abt 1500 - its called golden gate if i remember.

beside the swimming pool got a few clothing shops...wah u guys must buy the pirated burberry there! $6 each nia and best of all, they print burberry made in london on label and the outisde of the shirt somemore got the burberry tag! I bought 3 different designs that time!

from my knowledge mae sai have no legal etablishments on girl chasing, it's a really really small town...the fuck shops are all located on top of the clothing shops...one stretch...of them. most of them will be from mynamar but still acceptable quality as they will be very young.

I will like to update on Maesai. Wang Thong has increased its rate to 1100B/Night.

Also, please advoid Top North Hotel (400Baht) if possible. It charges 400B/Night/. Cheap but if you are able to sleep with maggots......My bed was infested with maggots and best of all, they lock the hotel up after 11pm.

Point to note is that most establishments that provide sexual services have bee demolished as MaeSai and tachilek has undergorn extensive facelift.

Can try the S-House which is along the road after the Mae Sai immigration office. To go to these road, walk toward the Thai custom. But dun enter it, instead u will notice a road at the left side of the custom (with u facing the custom). Follow the road and keep to your left. There is a whole row of shop and cheap hotel and guesthouses along these road. There are some guesthouse (i think is named Cobra Guest House) which is on hillside, overlooking to the Myanmar's border town of Tachilek.

The S-House cost about 500bahts with aircon and hot shower. Value for money. Hope that my info. helps. I had been to Mae Sai for about 4-5 times and has some friends there. For the last trip, had the chance to sit around at the roadside having steamboat in 10 degree celsius temperature. That is shiok.

Remenbered I ventured into Takiley Myanmar for a day trip last year, cost 5 USD. I walked around and many motorboy offered to take me to ladies ladies. I picked a very friendly one and went with him for some adventure.

He took me to see a few lady houses. Each house has about 5-10 girls and some were really cute. One shot they wanted 300-500 bahts depend on the freshness and quality. In a 5 hour stay, I screwed 4 girls and cum 3 times in 3ladyhouses.

All these girls were cheerful and did seemed they were forced there, and they actually moaned, one downside is the rooms were pig sty and the girls actually live there.

One of the girls even washed my hair for me, and 2 out of 4 gave me bbbj, and one even proposed to me to cum in her mouth for 200 tip, yes I took up on her offer.

These ladyhouses seem all cheerful, and girls quite energetic and fun. Very impressive of these 300-500 screws, better than these 3000 baht screwin BKK. But prepare to endure the 300 baht ambiente with girl quality not in parellel comparison.

Bro,

Mae Sai is a two way road town la.. quite small. Can walk one way to the end , takes abt 30 mins, then u-turn liao..

I know got some small "ktv"s of local gals for hire.. but quite discreet one..If u got t tirak there, then sure no chance to visit these "ktv"s la.... bec her relatives might be working in one of these joints!!!!

As for shopping, its only the local market, shops ard the myanmar-thai border. No big shopping centres. Products are so so , mainly Made in China....

I stayed in Tai Tong with my tirak n visited her family's place in the out lying areas... these areas like kampungs la.. but need the moto to move ard...

Stay abt 3 days in mae sai, sian liao..unless ur tirak is thai or got special pass to goto chiangrai, then can explore more.. got a uni at chiangrai, can go hook the uni students there... kekekeke...:D

This all from my recollections abt 2 years back la... things might have changed tho'''..

If u can, goto tachilek for a day tour n/or fcuk fest..

Relating to Myanmar Passport.. I know of a girl who just recently applied for one. Total cost was about 60,000B, this was inclusive of accomodation in Yagoon, air ticket to Yagoon, paid for a guide and of course the passport. The whole process took about 2 weeks and she actually had a guide from the thai myanmar embassy.

bobo

Anyone knows what is the lastest cost of making a passport? is it still about 60,000B, inclusive of accomodation in Yagoon, air ticket to Yagoon, paid for a guide and of course the passport? And also what is the processing time? Does it need 2 weeks? Pls help Thanks.

but recently (december 2006) 1 of my friend's girl went to make, and it's only about 7days. PLUS the cost of making it was significantly cheaper by more den 50% of what you and me paid for back den... haha

Well Burma might just be starting to wakeup thier idea?

Wang Tong price increase liao. Went there last month and the hotel rate is 1000 baht per nite.

Stay at Piyaporn Place Hotel instead. Only 800 Baht with BF. It is further down the road but still within walking distance from the Custom House. It is also newer and cleaner.

Ok,so have to book air ticket from thai airline ourself and dan book hotel separately rite? is october consider peak season:confused:

yes bud. oct should be, dont need to worry so much. there is a few hotels there. if worry no hotel room can just give them a call n reserve one first.

if u going from sgp. u can either take a tiger airway or air asia to bkk. just take note on this try to give urself at least 2.5 hr for transiting in bkk.

Airasia love to be late but somehow have imporved that. still best to have 2.5hr to avoid problem. Also bkk custom damn bad. the last 2 time it take me 1hr plus to get out of the custom the Q damn long. person average 2 to 3min plus.

since u flying to chiangrai suggest u take thai airasia in bkk. cos it in the new airport. if u take one2go or nok air u had to go to the old airport it about 1hr traveling. unless u have lots of time but i think it not worth to go to the old airport since airasia flight to chiangrai.

if u think u dont like to take budget airline then take thai airway. it about 100sgd extra but u save the trouble of check into bkk custom n then check in again on the 4th floor for domestic flight. taking thai airway u only need to transit to another terminal and board your chiangrai flight and when u reach then check into custom in chiangrai airport

from chiangrai u can just book a cab to maesai. (unless u feel like trying out driving urself up to maesai then go rent a car. per day about 1300baht for a toyota vivo or honda jazz which include insurance. pls make sure u have personal and car insurance covered.

there is 2 police checkpoint when traveling to maesai. one is before mae chan the other one is almost reaching maesai. coming back towards the airport the same check point area. Remember to wear seat belt now a days they really catch pple for not wearing but some dont really care. they also will ask u for ur car license. so make sure u stop when they ask u to n wind down ur window.

beware of motorcycle n pple when driving. this pple drive like they are the king of the road hehehe so be extra careful.

Another way is take direct to chiangmai from singapore. then stay one day there n then next day take a flight to chiangrai. there is only one flight a day to chiangrai and it in the morning around 8am. SGA airline is nok air's sub.

agree with vmtech. my gf and i took a bus to phayao, the ride was ok and cheap. the bus is aircondition somemore.

Few yrs ago i took a bus from bkk to muhdahhan. took the bus at 7am reach there ard 7pm but the ride was comfort and they serve u drinks and snacks.

Actually I dont really like to take coach or bus but after i try it in thailand i find it ok. also is cheaper

Example me going to my gf house from airport if i take a taxi it cost me 800 to 900 baht but if i take a bus there it ard 65 baht. so much cheaper. even is 200 for aircon bus i also will take.

oh another thing hehehe the bus driver drive very fast hehehe

anyway u can see the price diff from chiangrai to chiang kong taking taxi n bus price. http://www.discoverylaos.com/e-version/MakeYourOwnTravelBy/FormCR.php

Yes bro I agree the bus culture in Thailand is very 'advance'....I remember they had those double-decker tour buses way before Golden Mile tour agencies had them. Do they still make pit-stops in Phitsanulok for 'khao tom' supper now? Must take a nostalgic bus trip from Morchit 1 of these days :)

Not really know maesai in n out. just that i went there quite a few times with my present gf and my ex gf use to stay in maesai.

i like north alot so prefer going to north n drive around. i try driving a few place from chiangrai. Places like Chiangmai, Phayao, theong, chiang khong, chiang sean, maesai, golden triangle, mae fa long, mae chan, pu chi fa.

it wonderful to drive but just to take note a little is that when driving in thailand. you have to be careful of motorcycles. if trucks and cars wanna over take u let them overtake.

always stay on the left lane unless u are overtaking from the right. always carry ur passport n driving license around when police stop u, they will ask u where u going to espcially going to maesai.

cos they are catching pple who does not have ic and drug dealer. recently they start to do spotcheck all over the towns due to drugs. after mr TS kanna kick, drugs are flowing back again.

Maybe bros wants to know some chiangrai news. here it is

According to Chiang Rai websites (news section) renovations of the province sports stadium with budjet of 60 millions baht to build a new soccer field ,running lanes, shooting sport ground (not sure its indoor or outdoor) and a new building for indoor sports. To finish at end of october 2007 (next month) and will continue with constructions up to year 2008 with a budjet about 100 millions baht.

All together from year 2007-2008 the approximately budjet of 200 millions baht. In the future the city will also build a new swimming pool of 50 meters.

For the new bus station will be build at Sansai. They already started the work at 22th of june 2007 so maybe some of you must have seen it?Constructions would be finish around april year 2009.

Amphur muang cant be expanding anymore i think its a good thing. The traffic inside the town would be less then now with less air pollution and noises. The new bus station is 6 kms away from town.

ok forgot to tell u. about maesai. if u planning to cross the border from maesai. just go Q up in the thai immgration and get out. after u are out cross the small bridge to myamma. just after the small bridge u look at ur right opps the road. u will see a small building or call it a small house. u will see alot of angmo or non-thai go in to a room.

go to that room. it for us n farang to get our passport chop. the thai acutally goes further down the house to get their pass.

thais will need to go to the admin house to get a letter before going into myamma and need to pay also. cant remember how much liao.

ok as i was saying once u go into the room. the officer will ask u whether u are staying in myamma or just a day trip. if u going for day trip just tell them day trip and they will ask u pay 500 baht. u will be given a entry card. u dont need to fill up the form. just q up n once ur turn sit down n the officer will type for u and ask u to give a big smile for ur photo taking. it will be printed on to ur entry card.

after that they will keep ur passport n give u a slip. so u can just walk the market in myamma beware of pickpockets it very crowded. after ur visit there go back to the same place where ur passport are being kept. give them the slip n they will find ur passport n give back to u. go in is sucks cos if u kanna alot of farang there u going to stuck there for a long time cos only 2 counters........ getting passport back is fast cos the officer have chop ur exit.

here is a pic i have done up. so u should have an idea where to go to.

Sg passport dont need any visa to go into myanmar. I not sure for longer period but for 1,2 days or day trip. U dont need visa just pay 500 baht to go in.

It safe so long u stay in the crowd and dont go to quite place, u should be fine.
