ust read the latest Chinese paper headlines while queuing at NTUC. It seems that a 60+ year old auntie was angry at some prostitutes working along Lor. 24 as they were blocking her home. So she picked a fight with them and drove them away.
Fearing loss of customers and probably police attention, the working girls left. But they returned today to settle the account with auntie.
I don't want to take sides, but I have this advice for the auntie and others like her.
Have you thought this through, auntie? Being a Geylang Cheongster myself, I can tell you that driving away the girls (and their pimps) will not help the situation. Let me share with you all this FR.
There was a period of low activity in Geylang after intensive police raids. So during one of those nights, I went strolling along the lanes hoping to spot some action.
The girls were all missing from their usual spots, but the foreign workers who typically congregate along Lor. 24 were all there. Loitering and waiting. Chit-chatting among themselves as they waited hopefully for the return of the girls.
Why Lor. 24? Because foreign workers (they are usually construction workers from the nearby dorms) don't earn much. And the girls along Lor. 24 charge a low rate of 20-25 dollars per session.
Anyway, back to my FR. So the girls weren't around but the hopeful workers were. Nothing happened until a female devotee (or employee) at the Buddhist temple walked out towards the coffee shop. Perhaps she was sent to "da bao" something or perhaps she was hungry herself. Doesn't matter.
What mattered then was that several workers perked up immediately and started walking, slowly at first, towards the lone female. Then they started speeding up as they got closer. They kept shouting "How much?" over and over, but the girl who obviously wasn't a prostitute was too frightened to answer.
The workers backed off and rejoined their group when the girl they were stalking darted into the safety of the nearest clan association.
We have A LOT of foreign workers here, transplanted away from their families and girlfriends etc. The girls along Lor. 24 provide an essential service for these men. Without the (hard)working girls, who knows what these men will resort to?
