Hey guys, I'm thinking about setting up a sex toy shop (so we can have more kinky sex!), but I'm not sure about the rules leh...no info online AFAIK. Some say technically it's still illegal to import and sell (Stomp), some say Customs will seize, but then there are so many brick and mortar shops selling.

Any bros in the customs/legal industry care to comment?

From what I know, it is still a grey area. It is totally up to them to seize your goods or to let it in. Knew a couple of sex toys shop owners (the bigger shops when all the small shops are still not up yet) a couple of years back and most of them had coffee sessions with the guys in blue before because of the business.

But well, since there seems to be more of such shops around nowadays, we can probably conclude that they are loosening up. You can probably bring in your shipments in smaller batches in order to reduce risk of your goods being seized.

how is sex shop considered a sin shop, braddah. sex shop is for anyone's recreation, braddah. for u n ur high class maid too, braddah.

I believe all business out there have gor unique value proposition to its customers. the sames goes to heroine, cocaine or meth biz, the drug addicts view them as delicacies.

This is interesting. Seems like it depends on how you position your store - So long as it doesn't seem to be "obscene", it is fine.

Is it legal to sell sex toys in Singapore and what are the licenses required for sale of such products?

Thank you for your enquiry.

The official position seems to be that the police does not license the sale of sex toys. There are sex shops and even sex exhibitions in Singapore, as the information below indicates. However, there is some ambiguity as regards the interpretation of the law.

Speech by Senior Minister of State A/P Ho Peng Kee – Striking A Balance, 05February 2009

23. Mr De Souza talks about shops selling novelty sex toys. Such shops do not require a Police licence to operate. However, Police advises these shops to display their wares discreetly. Articles which may offend or embarrass others should not be in plain view of the public. Objects which promote offences such as bestiality and necrophilia are not permitted. In addition, such shops should not admit persons below the age of 21.

24. Mr De Souza raised the example of how Scotland licenses sex shops. Should we similarly restrict where these shops can operate? Our current approach is that premises designated for commercial use may be used for any legitimate business purpose. Singapore is a compact city state where most commercial areas will have residences nearby. Moreover, with the internet and other modern technologies, restricting where these retail outlets can operate will not insulate our children from such influences.

Straits Times articles

However, according to this Straits Times article,

"The police do not license the sale of sex toys . However, its spokesman says: 'The public is reminded that under Section 292 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, it is an offence to sell, distribute, exhibit, import or export an obscene object.'

Any person convicted under this section shall be jailed for a term which may extend to three months, fined, or both. "

But it doesn't stop there. In the last four or five years, Singapore has seen a range of services and shops dedicated to helping couples improve their sex lives.

Shops selling sex toys and other paraphernalia have mushroomed in malls islandwide

*scratches head - Condomania was around for donkey years and the sex shop in midpoint orchard was also there for a pretty long time.... as far as i know all sex shops in singapore are NOT discreet ;) and display Some articles in the window....

*besides: some people get offended by lingerie displays, and nobody has caught lingerie shops for their displays :D

Typical singapore goviment doublespeak here :p
