Rate is 230.50 this afternoon.

Read in the papers that the RM and the chinese yuan may be allowed to float soon, even though Badawi say no such thing. RM is about 10% undervalued.

My financial planner actually advised me to change some RM and yuan.

Brudders who frequent M'sia and China shd consider doing the same. These 2 can't really go much lower, at least when they rebound, we still have some of the currencies bought at a better rate.

My 2 cents worth.

Observers bet RM peg will move soon
KUALA LUMPUR - SPECULATORS are betting that Malaysia will bow to growing pressure to review its currency peg to the shrinking US dollar.

Many analysts not only believe they are right but also insist that the government should make a change soon.

Foreign cash has been pouring into Malaysia, hiking its foreign reserves by 19 per cent or US$10.7 billion (S$17.6 billion) in the fourth quarter of last year alone, Barclays Capital wrote in a research paper last Friday.

Comments by econo mists and even the man who imposed the peg - former premier Mahathir Mohamad - that the time is right for change 'are likely to accelerate such speculative inflows', Barclays Capital said.

It forecast a change in the pegged rate of 3.8 to the dollar - in place since 1998 - around the middle of the year, while some economists have urged more immediate action.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi responded to Tun Dr Mahathir's call last week by saying no change would be made at the moment, but signalled that the government is ready to be flexible. 'If there comes a time when changes are required to be made for the benefit of the people, we would consider making the changes then,' said Datuk Seri Abdullah, who is also Finance Minister.

Adding to the pressure on the government, local think-tank Malaysian Institute of Economic Research said last week that the 'window of opportunity' for change from a position of strength was shrinking.

It has warned that a failure to act soon could lead to a highly disruptive ringgit correction.

Perhaps the most notable push for a review came from Dr Mahathir, who defied International Monetary Fund (IMF) prescriptions to peg the ringgit to the dollar and impose capital controls during the Asian financial crisis.

The IMF later acknowledged that his action had helped Malaysia weather the storm better than many neighbouring countries. But the former premier said the sharp decline in the dollar's value meant it was now costlier for Malaysia to import products from Japan, Europe and elsewhere.

Estimates of the ringgit's fair value by banks and research houses range from 3.3 to 3.6 to the dollar, rather than the currently pegged 3.8.

With many economists believing change is inevitable, attention has focused on what form the change will take, with many seeing a re-peg to the dollar at an appreciated value or a managed float against a basket of currencies as more likely than a free float.

Speculation that China may adjust its own currency peg to the dollar and allow the yuan to rise has lent strength to the belief that Malaysia may follow suit, but Barclays Capital said any action was more likely to be driven by Malaysia's own priorities. \-- AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

My dear Bro DragonDog,

BKE is bukit timah expressway, it will lead you all the way to Woodlands Checkpoint, show yr passport to our own immigration, pass and the next place you will reach is malaysian CUSTOM whereby you will need to show your passport again but this time round you;ll need to fill in a malaysian immigration card.. :(

BKE stands for Bukit Timah Expressway.
Customs = Singapore Customs on singapore side. Malaysia customs on Johor Bahru. The place where they stamp or check your passport.

Read from newspaper that there would be a likelihood that the exchange rate will drop drastically this year 'cos Malaysia might want to peg the ringgit to green bag at a lower rate, probably a 20% drop. If like that suay lah.... :(

What "JBCheongster" trying to say is that Malaysia riggit is most likely to drop down this year, i.e. may not be what we are getting now (S$100 - ~RM$230). However, the rates may not drop so fast to the 'pre-97' crisis level.

If you have some spare cash, may want to consider putting some cash in Fix deposit (FD) in Malaysia banks. Like some of my friends are doing now.

yes the rate appears to be droping cos US fed might increase another round of interest rate hikes.
might touch the 230 barrier this weekend.

I understand that you don't need another person to open or "introduce" you to open an FD account in Malaysia. Just bought my s'porean friend to open their FD (in Maybank & Hong Leong) in late April 05.
The only thing you need to note that for any s'porean or individual foreigner, you cannot deposit more than RM10,000 per day in the same bank.
Note my "per day" & "same bank". However, you can go to different bank & deposit there. Or unless you travel to Malaysia every day, then you might want to deposit in the same bank.
Hope this help.

My Singaporean friend told me that he once want to open an saving account at May Bank at City Square. The counter girl told him, saving account is only for the local (Bumis) and Malaysian citizens. She rejected his application.

How about other banks. Is there any ways to open a saving account for non-Malaysian in Malaysia Banks.

Is an good savings cum investment. Every times when the rate are high, I can simply exchange some Malaysian currency and deposit it into the bank there............................................. .................rather than exchange and deposit into HCs expenditure.................................hehehe .

Bro fcuksam.

Thanks for your info. Will up u once i regain my power after 24 hrs. One clarification though - if i want to deposit say RM 50,000 - that means I must joint account with another Malaysian or must I place RM 10,000 on Monday then another RM10,000 on tuesday until Fri or I have to spread to five local Malaysian banks with $10,000 FD each. Yes, you are right.

If you are not going to have a joint-account with another Malaysian, with the same bank (e.g. MayBank), Monday to Friday (RM 10,000 each day). Make sure you trust that Malaysian friend of yours, as he can also withdraw your money, if he happens to get hold of your deposit voucher (or slip).

Else on the same day, you can go to 5 different banks to deposit RM10,000 each.

Maybank's counter girl explaination puzzles me at times too. My wife (malaysian) & I wanted to open a joint-account (savings), and were told that we have to come back another day (i.e. must make an appointment in advance). Anyway no problem, as we goes in quite often. The following week, when we went in & ask another staff, he (this time is a he), told us - no need, can open on the spot.

Anyway, back to your query, I have yet to open or ask about savings account (for individual s'porean). My reply to Bro simonsim, is opening a FD, which I brought my 2 S'porean friends & open it - on the spot. Except 1 of my friend, a bit more $$$, have to go over to Hong Leong (across the road-back to Ocean) and open another FD (note Hong Leong FD is a combination of FD & Investment type), ask clearly before putting your $$$ there.

There is Citibank and Stanchart in JB. Another alternatives would be to open a Maybank account in Singapore. The ATM card can be used both here and in Malaysia, however, if use in Malaysia, Maybank will charge S$2 for every transaction. Of course the exchange rate if withdraw from the ATM in Malaysia will be lower according to prevailing bank rates.:D

I have both DBS and POSB ATM cards, both can also make transaction at JB ATM machines. Charges is also S$2 per transaction. My intention is to open an account to deposit ringgit when the exchange rate are good. The bank interest rate there, I believe, is also higher than in Singapore.

Rate at woodlands causeway @1500 hrs RM$226. Sian liao can't go JB for shopping. Anyway, now school holiday custom jammed like mad. Better to go when school holiday is over.

cos RM peg with USD. now USD rising against SGD so results in lower RM we get in exchange for SGD. This trend seems set to continue. Now a bonk in jb cost abt SGD2-5 more compared with end april.
Now school holiday jam very bad as jam begin at ard noon cos malaysia cars allowed to come in free to sg. Better wait till school re-open in another 12 days then venture into malaysia when there is a smoother flow of traffic. need not waste time cos of jam.

Sometimes I change in Bugis or Chinatown and the rate is better than JB. Seems like they know now is holiday season and they adjust the rate lower so that they can earn more.

yesterday on 1st July 05, the exchange rate was RM 224.30.... and agreed that it will cost more to bonk in Malaysia in view of the appreciating US$ and the imminent revaluation of renmenbi and ringgit.... if possible, hoard ringgit as much as possible if it ever hit 230 again

Bro wins1973....the reason is US$ is stronger than S$ now...it is now US$1 to S$1.702.....RM is pegged to the US$ at US$1 to RM3.80.......
US economy is better now than 2 years ago, and beside US$ interest rate is expected to raise again....... :(
