Clubbers throw support behind antidrug drive

A thick haze of cigarette smoke hung over the room as partiers crowded onto the dance floor, moving to the deafening house music being played by the disc jockey.

It seemed like just another Friday night at Millenium discotheque on Jl. Gajah Mada in West Jakarta. Except something different was going on, as evidenced by the anti-drug signs posted around the room and the plainclothes police officers checking everyone entering the club.

"We want to introduce you to having fun here without taking drugs. So, enjoy the party," Indra Bekti, a host, shouted to the crowd.

The DJs then took over, pumping out house music to get the crowd moving.

As the waitresses delivered drink orders, Miss Indonesia contestants visited tables to hand out anti-drug pins to guests.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani, Jakarta Tourism Agency head Haryanto Bajuri, Miss Indonesia Nadine Chandrawinata and several celebrities were also on hand to enjoy the "Party Without Drugs" campaign.

Several youth groups, including the Anti-Drug Youth Group, whose members all excel in music, sports or academics, were also invited to the party to show the guests what they could achieve if they stayed away from drugs.

The party reached its climax when several performers took to the stage to sing and dance, all the while delivering an anti-drug message.

The event marked the beginning of a new anti-drug campaign by the Jakarta Police that will move away from the raids that nightspots owners said were killing their businesses.

"We know that drug dealers use nightspots to sell their merchandise. Partygoers are potentials drug users. We will continue to monitor all nightclubs in Jakarta," the head of the Jakarta Police's drug unit, Sr. Comr. Carlo Brix Tewu, told The Jakarta Post.

Although doubts remain about the police's commitment to the campaign, several of the guests at Millenium welcomed the effort.

"We just want to have fun here. We know that several of our friends use drugs, but not all of us. We will prove that we are drug-free. However, we hope the drive will not just disappear after a month or two," Akian, a resident of Kota, West Jakarta, told the Post.

A guest from South Jakarta who asked not to be named expressed similar support and doubt.

"We want to know how far the police will go. We want to cooperate. The question is whether the campaign is just to boost the police's image or if it is just another business for them," he said.

The police are scheduled to hold "Party Without Drugs" events at Embassy and Dragon Fly in Central Jakarta, Hai-Lai in North Jakarta, Athena in West Jakarta and Blowfish in South Jakarta.

40,000 Jakarta nightclub workers facing layoffs

Workers in the entertainment industry are paying dearly for the current police campaign against drugs in cafes and amusement centers across the capital.

The Association of Indonesian Entertainment Center Owners (Aspehindo) said on Monday that at least 40,000 workers of the entertainment centers would have to be told to stay at home and risk losing their jobs should the police continue the current drug raids on night spots, such as discotheques, cafes and karaoke centers.

Aspehindo chairman Adrian Maelite said that many owners of entertainment centers have laid off workers in order to cut costs amid significantly lower business.

"Recent drug raids by the police have scared the customers away. Some owners have decided to open only on weekends as a result of lower customer numbers, forcing them to lay off most of their workers," he told The Jakarta Post.

Should the police continue with their aggressive raids on entertainment centers, there would be massive lay-offs in the industry within several weeks, he warned.

"In one or two weeks, entertainment center owners will have to send home 30 percent of their workers or more than 120,000 people," he said.

There are around 400,000 people working in entertainment centers in the city, mostly discotheques and karaoke centers, which account for 60 percent of the total number of workers.

Adrian said that the police drug raids had tarnished the image of entertainment centers.

"We would call on the police to launch covert drug operations so that they do not disturb our customers, instead of launching blanket raids," he said.

The police raids have been making the headlines recently as several well-known people have been caught in the dragnet, including former world boxing champion Ellyas Pical and film star Ria Irawan.

Adrian questioned police's policy of focusing on nightspots, pointing to the low number of customers found to have consumed or be in possession of illegal drugs.

He said that only 5 percent of the customers from whom urine samples had been taken had tested positive for drugs and that the police had discovered 190 ecstasy pills in three weeks of operations, while no other illicit drugs, like heroin and marijuana, for example, had been found.

Meanwhile, chief of Jakarta Police's drug squad, Sr. Comr. Carlo Brix Tewu, emphasized that police would continue with the raids.

"We will continue launching antidrug raids until nightspot managements are willing to take part in the drive by making sure that their premises are free of drug abuse and drug dealing," he told the Post.

He said that the managements of nightspots could take part in the antidrug campaign by putting up posters and announcements strictly prohibiting guests from carrying illicit drugs.

In the three-week operation, he said, around 10,000 customers were examined, but only 1,300 were asked to undergo urine tests.

"We found 140 of the people whose urine samples were tested to have consumed drugs," he said.

As the months pass and the drug raids, gambling crackdowns, and Pirate DVD and Software crackdowns keep mounting, I get a nervous sense that these trends are permanent. It would be depressing to see the availability of WL dry up and the no holds bar nightlife die out. I fear that if it goes the way of Thailand it hit the economy worse than Thailand, Indo doesn't seem to have the same wave of economic growth as Thailand.

Unfortunately, my feelings are pretty uninformed conjectures. I would appreciate any thoughts others could offer on whether these crackdowns are permanent or temporary, and how far are these crackdown gonna go? (For my point of self interest are we gonna see places like PenJay and TC and Blok M cleaned up of all the Ayam?)

Hi bros, just like to share my experience for my nite recce mission for tonite.

Met up bro patpat in the evening and we decide to go for some action and we decide to goto Blok M. Upon reaching that place, we find that the place is too dark and does not look so safe. Hence we did not get off the cab and decide to go for another place.

The cab driver recommend us White Horse. He say it's a karaoke and spa joint so we secide to give it a shot. When we go in, we found that the place is a karaoke. When check out the price and it's 450,000rp until 1am and the gals is 60,000rp for a minimum of 2 hrs. We find that it's not worth it cos it was 11pm. Hence we decide to change place again.

After much discussion, we decide to goto BATS. The enterance fee is 60,000rp per person inclusive of one drink. While we are having our drink, I was approach by a group of gals. 2 of them I find them not bad... one is 7/10 and the other is 6.5/10. Manage to do some ruba ruba with them. When I pop the question to go back to my hotel, she say that it will cost me 500,000rp. When I ask bro patpat, he say his gal only qoute him 400,000rp. I tried to negotiate down to 400,000rp due to lack of cash but failed. Hence LL go back to my hotel alone :(

Had quite a pleasant surprise when i reach my hotel as a man approach me and he say he can recommend me a gal for 400,000rp. Due to the tireness and do think I can perform well tonite, I ask him to contact me tomorrow.

Will keep u guys update of the experience once I have try it. :)

These Ayam will never be properly cleaned up. Those Chinese from China Maybe. That they can collect more protection money lah. I was told that indeed some girls in SPA now refuse to provide special other then a HJ for fear of being caught with their pants down. Anyway, that's few and far between.

From the Economy point of view. With clubs closing at 3 am, less customer thus less spending, tips and real money rolling. It is hurting the retail sector now with less ppl going to mall and eating out. That's also reason why the rup have hit 10250 to a dollar today. Sigh.....

Imigrasi, Dephuk dan HAM, Lukmiardi, mereka semua menyalahgunakan visa turis dengan bekerja sebagai wanita penghibur. Mereka masuk ke Indonesia dibawa oleh 13 sponsor. "Mereka ini semuanya mencari uang di tempat hiburan, bukan sebagai pengunjung," ujar Lukmiardi, Rabu (24/8).

Penjaringan 69 wanita penghibur ini tergolong kecil. Mereka dijaring dari tempat hiburan di Jakarta Pusat dan Jakarta Utara. Sementara, razia di pusat-pusat hiburan di kawasan Jakarta Barat yang paling dicurigai justru tanpa hasil karena para amoy keburu diumpetin. Sebab, rencana razia bocor duluan.

Sebanyak 69 wanita penghibur yang terjaring, 28 berasal dari empat lokasi yakni Raja Mas, Olympic, Sauna Beverly Hills, dan Salon Top Link. Sebanyak 22 berasal dari Jakarta Utara seperti Hailai, Sumo, Thematic, dan Sand. Dari Jakarta Pusat terjaring 10 wanita, yakni dari Emporium dan Hotel Golden. "Unsur eksploitasinya lebih besar. Di antara mereka juga ada yang terjebak oleh hidung belang, sehingga terjerumus ke dalam dunia pemuas seks," kata Lukmiardi.

Secara terpisah Kabid Humas Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Tjiptono mengatakan, operasi atau razia dengan sandi Kencana Pura memang sengaja digelar dengan sasaran wanita WNA yang jadi pekerja seks komersial. Polisi tidak sebatas menindak para pekerja seks tapi juga menindak mucikarinya. "Bahkan bila perlu pemilik tempat hiburan juga bisa kita mintai keterangan karena mempekerjakan warga asing yang tidak sesuai dengan visanya," tegasnya.

Polda Metro Jaya saat ini tengah menyelidiki keterlibatan sejumlah perusahaan yang menjadi sponsor para amoy. "Sponsor itu ikut andil mendatangkan para PSK itu ke Jakarta. Makanya kita juga akan tindak sesuai hukum yang berlaku," ujar mantan Kapolres Metro Jakarta Timur ini. (Nir/Wid)

67 foreign prostitutes arrested

Sixty-eight foreign sex workers were apprehended in raids on a number of nightclubs, saunas and beauty salons here on Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday.

City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said that all of the foreigners had misused their visas by working as sex workers in the country. Some of them were holding expired visas.

"They pretended to be employees of nightclubs, saunas or salons to fool authorities," Tjiptono said.

He said the women would be deported as soon as possible.

"They are under our jurisdiction and we will hand them over to the Immigration Office for immigration offenses," he told The Jakarta Post.

The raids, conducted under the Kencana Pura operation, are the first against foreign sex workers in the capital.

Tjiptono said the Immigration Office would likely send them back to their respective countries.

He said five of the 68 women's visas had expired, while the rest were on tourist visas.

"Five women are from Uzbekistan and Russia, while the others come from China. We suspect many other illegal workers operate in Indonesia," he said.

Nine Chinese women were arrested at the Golden Flower and Classic discotheques in Central Jakarta and another five Chinese sex workers at the Emporium.

The Central Jakarta Police nabbed five Russian and Uzbek women in the Golden hotel on Jl. Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta.

North Jakarta Police arrested 23 Chinese women in Hai-Lai, Sumo, Sands and Thematic discotheques, while the West Jakarta police apprehended 26 Chinese women in Rajamas and Olympic discotheques, Top Link Salon and Baverly Hills Sauna.

"We will continue to launch operations to rid Jakarta of illegal workers and prostitutes over the next month. If we still receive reports about the existence of such foreigners, we will conduct similar operations," Tjiptono said.

Even though it has been an open secret for many years that foreign sex workers were available in the capital, little has been done by the Immigration Office and the police to eliminate them.

70 more foreign sex workers arrested

Only two days after 68 foreign sex workers were arrested in several nightclubs, saunas and beauty salons, city police announced on Friday that they had arrested 70 more foreign sex workers.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said the police also arrested four alleged pimps who had brought the women to the country and provided them with accommodation.

"Together with previous arrests, we have detained around 180 foreign workers. We are still examining who committed immigration offenses. If they abused their visas by working as sex workers we will deport them as soon as possible.

"If their visas are valid, they will be allowed to stay," he said.

Firman added that the women, who come from China, Uzbekistan, Russia and other East European countries, were liable to be tried at court if it was discovered that they committed other crimes, such as drug trafficking.

He said the police were questioning the four pimps to find out whether they were members of a syndicate as well as to locate their associates.

The raids, conducted under the Kencana Pura operation, are the first against foreign sex workers in the capital.

"We will continue the operation until Jakarta is void of foreign sex workers. We suspect that many other foreigners are likewise abusing their visas, as we have arrested so many of them in so few days," Firman said.

Observers suspect that the police and the immigration office are collaborating with people to protect foreign sex workers, since little had previously been done by the two institutions to eliminate such workers from capital. -- JP

"Santi", 23, a sex worker in Batam, complained that fewer clients had visited her over the past few months.

"Malaysian and Singaporean tourists aren't turning up any more and spending money at my place," said Santi, a masseur cum sex worker hailing from West Java. Santi works as a masseur in a massage parlor in the Nagoya Business Center.

"The situation is very different compared to four years ago. Then, I provided services for at least two clients a day, but now it is now very difficult to get two customers even in a week," said Santi.

Santi is among 50 sex workers working in the massage parlor. Aged between 18 and 30 years, they are displayed in a 5x6 meter glass room for viewing by customers.

The prostitutes come from various regions in Java and Sumatra, and some are of Chinese descent.

Santi said that each client who booked her had to pay Rp 250,000 (US$28) to the massage parlor for an overnight "long" service, and Rp 150,000 for a "short" service.

Of this, she received Rp 100,000 for the long service, and Rp 50,000 for the short service.

"I rely more on the customer's tip. They usually give us big tips, especially clients from Malaysia and Singapore," said Santi.

But, the good old days may have passed. The number of clients visiting massage parlors in Batam had started declining some months ago, which has affected incomes for both the prostitutes and the owners of the premises.

At least three massage parlors in the business center had closed down over the past few months.

Santi recalled that when she first came to Batam four years ago she could make Rp 1 million a week, but now she was only earning Rp 200,000 a week.

The slowdown in business was also affecting "Lastri", another prostitute at a different massage parlor in the business center.

Lastri said that she used to earn at least Rp 100,000 a day, but recently she could only earn half that amount.

There is no clear reason for the decline in Batam's prostitution business, however, a government official on the island said that a high-profile campaign on HIV/AIDS could be a factor.

In a separate development, the head of Social Office at the Batam administration, Rayanis Aminah, said that the local government had imposed strict new measures recently to prevent more prostitutes from coming to the city.

Under a mayoral decree issued recently, newcomers to Batam had to register with the Batam mayoralty administration and are only allowed to stay and work on the island after they have convinced government officials that they had a "clear purpose" in being there, said Rayanis.

While other teenagers of her age are either strolling around the city's malls or sitting quietly at home, 15-year-old Kartika (not her real name) spends her nights with guests at a cafe in the capital.

Kartika, a newcomer to the commercial sex industry, who comes from Karawang, West Java, more often than not ends up in hotel rooms with clients.

According to Hery, an activist from the non-governmental organization Bangun Mitra Sejati (BMS), who has been trying to get her to quit the business, Kartika believes "it is my body that I am selling, but not my soul."

"Although what drives (people like Kartika) into prostitution is inarguably money, this is not the root of the problem for child sex workers," Hery said.

"Their families have the economic problems, not them. The children are vulnerable and have no other recourse for income," he said.

Activists define child sex workers as anyone under the age of 18 engaged in commercial sex, which Hery cites as among the worst forms of labor in the world.

In Jakarta alone, the International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates more than 5,000 children are involved in prostitution.

The city has mapped six areas in which child prostitution occurs in a large numbers: Prumpung in North Jakarta, Grogol in West Jakarta, Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta, Jatinegara and Ciracas in East Jakarta and Blok M in South Jakarta.

"In terms of child prostitution or any kind of child labor, it does not matter whether the number is small or large," Hery said. "We have to realize that these children should not be there."

Hery, who works with three other volunteers in BMS, estimates that more than 800 children between 12 and 18 are forced into prostitution in cafes, hotels and warung kopi (traditional coffee shops) in East Jakarta alone.

The children are either sold by their parents to cafe owners, or lured to Jakarta by third parties known as calo.

ILO research shows that almost 70 percent of the children found their way into prostitution with the "help" of their closest relatives or friends.

"Some are victims of child trafficking, but there are many who have their parents visiting them in the cafes regularly," he said. The children come from poor areas in West Java like Subang, Sukabumi, Indramayu and Karawang.

"They often have psycho-social problems that are much more difficult to overcome than the economic ones," he said.

Kartika showed symptoms of multiple personality. "She has positioned herself into two identities, the Kartika who sells her body and the Kartika who still prays regularly every day," said Hery.

Kartika, who looks no different than any ordinary country girl, works 24/7 and receives only 40 percent of the Rp 300,000 to Rp 600,000 booking fees that her boss takes in.

"They claim to earn some Rp 2 million a month, but in fact a lot of them are making less than that because their income is cut by the germo (pimp)," Hery said.

In a study conducted by ILO on 12 child prostitutes, more than 70 percent of them worked more than eight hours a day.

These children are highly prone to sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, physical as well as mental abuse and often end up continuing to sell their bodies after they grow up.

BMS and Bandungwangi, another NGO helping child prostitutes in Prumpung, are two organizations in the capital trying to rehabilitate child prostitutes.

"We are trying to build up their self-awareness, sit down together to plan their future and later give them vocational training," BMS director Anni said. "This difficult project will be scaled up later."

"We see a difference in their eyes as they slowly convince themselves to quit and seek other opportunities," Hery said.

Although no-one can ever be absolutely certain, it is estimated that there are about 800 children aged 14 to 18 years old who are employed as sex workers in the red light cafes of Bambu Apus, East Jakarta.

"The children claim to be from Karawang, Subang and Sukabumi," said an activist from a non-governmental organization working to retrieve child prostitutes from the area.

"Some of them even proudly claim that they are from Indramayu -- another regency in West Java well-known for supplying prostitutes -- as a way to lift their status in front of guests," said the activist, who asked to be identified only as Hery.

The children actually live with their families very close to where they work.

Hery said that the children were often victims of people closest to them. "One of the girls who joined our retrieval program was visited by her mother who seemed to be fully aware of what her daughter was doing for a living," he said.

The children work from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m., luring men to come and enjoy music, beverages and their services.

"They are paid a commission of Rp 1,000 for every bottle of soft drink and Rp 2,000 for every glass of beer that they serve," Hery said. "What they make depends on how many guests they serve."

Tight competition made them willing to say or do anything in order to attract guests.

According to Burdah, a trainer for a child prostitute retrieval program, the girls admitted that "it is sort of included in the procedure to give guests a 'thank you' kiss. That way, when they come back they will look for us".

Many of the children live in rented rooms behind the cafes or in nearby areas, where around 10 children shared a 12-square-meter room.

"They spend their spare time checking their looks in their compact mirrors," Burdah said.

Aside from cafes, East Jakarta's local celebrations or hajatan -- marriage receptions, parties or musical performances -- are events that attract child prostitutes.

"When big hajatan are held there will be people selling drinks in pushcarts," said Hery. "They each have at least two girls called jontrot helping them to entertain buyers behind the pushcarts where a mat is spread."

Both cafe owners and pushcart vendors are very protective of the children they hire, said Hery.

In the event of raids, the children were often equipped with false identity cards stating that they were at least 20 years old, along with phony marriage certificates and even "husbands".

The hardships of life has taught these children how to give smart answers to whoever asks them about their activities.

One seventeen-year old used to tell everybody that she was a high school graduate waiting to enter an academy on a scholarship.

"These children often reflect what in their imagination they want to be in the replies they give," said Hery. (003)

Was told it was closing soon but was not told of the fire which gutted most of the market (block M bldg I n II ) early Mon morning. Didn't know abt the fire until that morning at breakfast,while reading Jakarta Post.Don't know if the SPAS n DISCO there is affected. I really hope not.
Went to CJ's at 10mins to 2am,crowd was exiting.Took a cab to htl and on the way cabby recommended me go see gals in hse.Went to two hse but didn't see any that was pleasing.Price fr 300k-400k.

More foreign sex workers arrested

JAKARTA: After arresting over 180 foreign sex workers last Friday, police and immigration officials apprehended another 36 foreign sex workers in several nightclubs in Jakarta over the weekend.

One Mongolian, three Thais, seven Uzbeks and Russians and 25 Chinese were apprehended at Hai-Lai in North Jakarta and Thematic and Sumo nightclubs in West Jakarta.

Jakarta Immigration Office head Arwin Adityawarman said that all of the arrested women had abused their tourist visas by plying their trade.

Earlier, police and immigration officers arrested over 180 alleged foreign sex workers.

City police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said last Friday there would be further raids against foreign sex workers at nightclubs, bars, saunas and discotheque. --JP

More suspected drug dealers apprehended

With a stepped-up police campaign, more drug dealers are being taken off the streets of the capital.

The head of the Jakarta Police's drug unit, Sr. Comr. Carlo Brix Tewu, said on Thursday the number of dealers arrested went up 34 percent from 235 in June to 314 in July.

"Aside from the dealers, we also arrested over 850 drug users in June and July. We hope these arrests reduce the circulation of drugs in the capital," he said.

Over 70 percent of the drug dealers and users arrested were between the ages of 10 and 27, he said.

During the two-month operation, police confiscated 170 grams of heroin, 208 grams of marijuana, 84 grams of shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) and 83 ecstasy pills.

Carlo said his officers had already arrested hundreds of drug dealers and users in August in a series of raids on nightclubs and discotheques.

He said the nightclub raids had led to the arrests of over 100 suspected users and traffickers, adding that officers also confiscated 286 ecstasy pills and 7.1 grams of shabu-shabu.

Carlo said the police had handed over the case files on most of the suspects to prosecutors.

All of the suspects will be charged under Law No. 22/1997 on narcotics and Law No. 22/1997 on psychotropics.

"It is now up to prosecutors and the courts to give them heavy punishments. We hope the punishments will have a deterrent effect, discouraging drug dealers from operating in Jakarta," Carlo said.

Police have also taken steps to teach young people the importance of saying no to drugs.

The police have organized the Fun Without Drugs program, holding events in nightclubs each week.

Two weeks ago an event was held at the Embassy Discotheque in West Jakarta, and last week at the Millennium disco in West Jakarta. This week a party will be held at Dragonfly in South Jakarta.

Despite the success in arresting drugs dealers and users, police have been unable to touch the sources of the drugs, arresting just one suspected producer during the campaign.

Carlo said the police were having trouble because most of the drugs came from abroad.

"Although locals can now produce drugs, there are not many local players in the business. We are still tracking them down. Most drugs come from abroad. It is difficult to watch all of the entryways into the country," he said.

He said the police required assistance from other agencies, including the immigration office, the customs and excise office and the Navy, to stop the flow of drugs into the country.

Hi guys, i'm in jakarta rite now. Jus wana share my experience last night (Thursday 1 September) at Hotel Borobudur. FYI: No sex, just a dairy of what i went through. Don't be hatin..... up me points if u share my pain.

Heard bout the raid that's going on in Jakarta, so i was pessimistic about the current nightlife in sincity. i went to the bar that has live music on the 2nd floor around 9:30 and it was dead. there were at most 10 ppl in there incl the band. So i talked to the bartender and he told me to come back in couple of hours. so nothing better to do and went back to my hotel. when i went back to the bar around elevenish it was still the same. so i just sat there, order some drink and apparently i'm not such a great drinker anymore cause i was half wasted just after a beer and 1 cocktail named balagan banteng??? that was recommended by the bartender.

Sat there till midnight and decided to check out the discotique 2 floors up. it was even deader (there's no such word i know). there was NOBODY!!. so finally i drag myself one floor down to check out the karaoke. mind u that i've never been to a karaoke b4. so i just walked around the place, nobody seemed to mind me and i made small talk with one of the staff there. he took me to the showroom. there were less than 10 chicks, all "pribumi". i saw one gal who wore beige dress, look kinda cute. i ordered her but when she walked out and said hi to me, i saw that her teeth was brown (yes brown not just yellow) like a rotten fruit. i thought about an excuse for a moment and told the staff to cancel it.

So i asked the staff, where are all da girlsss? he told me that usually it's quite down around 12ish and the prime time is 5 till 10 pm where ppl get off work. Being the first time at karaoke place of course i didn't knw that. i thought the later the merrier. but he told me that are couple of cute gals but they're all workin. so i told him that i'd come back in an hour.

Walked back to my room, tried to shake off my headache from the cocktail and fell asleep for half an hour. gave it a thought and decided to check out the place one last time. first i went to the bar, opened the door but didn't go in cause it was the same. went to the discotique, about 5 ppl there, no chicks. so walk down to the karaoke and saw a cute gal on the stairs. she didn't look at me and she was talkin 2 somebody on her cell so didn't wanna bother her. i thought that there must be lot more good stuff at the showroom. on my way to the showroom there were couple of chicks said hi to me but they weren't my type (to put it midlly). but when i saw the showroom there was 4 gals. i thought fuck i shoulda stalk dat cute gal. so took the elevator down. went to the bar for final drink and met those chicks who said hi to me. one gal was very aggresive, asking me to join her friends, hugging me, and one of her friends even ask me to order champange that cost 300,000 a pop. dat bitch. lol. but luckyly the bartender was smart and told me bout the price. i didn't say anything but he told her that there was no stock. so i stayed at the bar for about half an hour, tried to avoid that group of chicks.

it was a really slow night overall, maybe because it was thursday night. but being a newbie in jakarta it wasn't such a good experience. oh well, better luck next time. anybody knows anything to do at hotel borobudur and the surrounding pls let me know pls. thanks 4 reading.

Woke up with a terrible headache in the morning, checked email, printed some stuff for meeting and finished the meeting at noon. Went to Plaza Indonesia, for a little shoppin to kill time and went back to hotel. Flight was at 5 and didn't have anything to do, so i called for an in-room massage. A young javanese lady walked into my room after 10 mins, she's dark skinned, kinda cute face, and got this innocent look. Less than two weeks after German and Australian nationals were murdered in their rented houses, a Japanese identified as Isamu Otsu was found dead last Friday in Park Lane Hotel, South Jakarta.

Although there were no signs of violence found on Otsu's body -- who was found lying face down in the bathroom with blood around his nose -- police have not ruled out the possibility that he was murdered.

"We are still waiting for laboratory results. We have also questioned several witnesses and examined other evidence," general crimes unit chief at the Jakarta Police Sr. Comr. Suhardi Alius told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

On Aug. 22, German citizen Helmut Kleinen was found dead in his bedroom in his rented house in Jl. Bangka, South Jakarta.

On the same day, police arrested Kleinen's domestic helper and the latter's two friends as suspects of murder.

Earlier in mid August, Australian Frans Luis Merre, 70, was found dead in his house in the Tugu subdistrict of Depok.

Police suspect that the Australian was murdered by relatives of his domestic helper. Police said that they were still trying to find their whereabouts.

This year, several foreigners from South Korea, Russia, and Japan, have been found dead in their hotels, apartments or rented houses.

"We acknowledge that foreign nationals are being targeted by criminals as many live alone and isolate themselves from their surrounding area. Criminals will take advantage of such a situation," Suhardi said.

He added that sometimes it could be many days before the police became aware that a foreign resident had been murdered.

"We do in fact take special security measures to protect certain areas where foreigners live, but we can't guard them one by one because of limited numbers of personnel," he said.

The planes used by the airlines here are too old and poorly maintained. Just prau hard each time you fly their domestic airlines.

A Garuda Indonesia airliner flying from North Sumatra's capital of Medan made an emergency landing on Tuesday morning at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau, due to a fuel indicator problem.

In another incident on Tuesday, a Mandala aircraft returned to Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta after only 10 minutes in the air due to glitches with landing gear warning lamps.

There were no casualties in either of the incidents, which came just a day after a Mandala aircraft crashed into a dense residential area in Medan, killing 150 people on board and on the ground.

All 82 passengers of the Garuda Boeing 737-400 airplane were immediately transferred to other flights.

"Captain Toni Bagus saw that the plane's fuel indicator was faulty, and immediately landed at a nearby airport, which is in line with flight safety procedures," Garuda Indonesia spokesperson Pudjobroto was quoted as saying by Antara.

Among the fortunate passengers were Minister of Social Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah and five members of the House of Representatives Commission V on transportation, telecommunications and public works.

They were flying from Medan after making a visit of condolence for North Sumatra governor Tengku Rizal Nurdin, who was killed in the Mandala crash on Monday.

"There was only a problem with the fuel indicator. Our procedures rule that pilots should immediately land at a nearby airstrip if something suspicious occurs," he said.

Brushing off maintenance problems, Pudjobroto said the plane could still fly for many years to come. The plane was immediately repaired after landing.

Passengers, however, recalled a more frightening situation aboard the plane when the pilots told them that the plane's right engine had broken down.

Social ministry's director general of social assistance Amrun Daulay, who was accompanying Minister Bachtiar, said light turbulence occurred some 40 minutes after take-off.

"We were told by the pilots that there had been damage to the right engine and were told to remain calm. The pilots tried to fly manually, but later decided to land at a nearby airport," he was quoted as saying by detikcom.

The relatively minor incident was especially frightening for passengers following Monday's crash of the Mandala aircraft due to a total engine shutdown on takeoff at Polonia Airport in Medan.

In Jakarta, Mandala officials said the pilot of the Boeing 737-200 bound for Jambi made a U-turn because its landing gear lamps did not go off after takeoff.

"The lamps should have gone off when the plane was already flying. But they didn't," Mandala spokesperson Alex Widjojo explained.

The pilot of the plane decided to return to Jakarta to prevent any further problems and ensure the safety of passengers, Alex added. The plane is of the same type as the aircraft that crashed in Medan on Monday

Passenger manifest cock-up sparks anger, confusion

Legislator Antarini Malik received warm congratulations from her fellow colleagues at the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The legislators thought that she was one of the victims of the Mandala Airlines plane crash on Monday.

"Thank you, I am safe," she said, adding that she would have a ceremony (syukuran) to thank God for her life.

Antarini, the daughter of the country's former vice president Adam Malik, was not a passenger of the ill-fated aircraft. But, her family, friends and colleagues thought that she was one of the victims as her name appeared on television based on the passenger manifest released by Mandala after the crash, in which 103 passengers and crew died.

"I flew with Adam Air at 9:30 a.m. I had already arrived in Jakarta when the accident took place. I don't know why somebody used my name as (a passenger of) the Mandala plane. The management is awful," she asserted.

Antarini did book a seat on the Mandala flight. However, she could not get a ticket upon arrival at the airport, so she decided to fly with Adam Air instead.

The opposite happened to Jose Christopel Hutagalung. The father of one child was a dead victim of the crash, but his name did not appear in the manifest.

One of his relatives said that the 28-year-old used a ticket, which was booked for somebody named Miftah. He was forced to buy the ticket from one of the ubiquitous middlemen at Polonia Airport.

Jose had earlier come to Medan to get the high school graduation certificate of his brother, needed for enrollment at the Bandung's Padjajaran University.

His relatives, who took him to the airport, phoned his parents in Tarutung, North Sumatra and told his mother that Jose was a passenger with Mandala. Attempts to contact his cellular phone were not successful.

His mother, his wife and his brother, who arrived at the crash site later, recognized his body from his teeth and blood type.

The management of Mandala admitted the problem with the manifest as it did not provide accurate information on the names of the passengers.

Acting director of Mandala, Maj. Gen. Asril Tanjung said that his office would investigate.

"Difficult...it's difficult. It is supposed to be more organized. Maybe there is such a weakness, we will fix it," he told The Jakarta Post at the crash site.

Asril, however, said that such problems also occurred with other flights as some passengers who booked or bought tickets could decide to cancel their flight and give the tickets to other people.

Such a move, he said, should not be done as it violates flight administration regulations.

Asril insisted, however, that the problem with the manifests were not a reflection of poor administration at Mandala.

Gambling den owner arrested, 70 machines seized

Confirming public suspicions that gambling dens are still thriving in the capital, city police arrested on Monday evening an owner of a gambling den in Beruang Cafe on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, Central Jakarta and confiscated 70 gambling machines.

Chief of the serious crimes unit of Jakarta Police Comr. Andry Wibowo said that police had arrested the owner of Cafe Beruang identified as Abdul Hadi alias Ahok and three of his employees identified as Franky Kornelis, Teddy Cahya and Irsan Alamsyah.

"We arrested them following tipoffs from local residents. We will detain them here at the headquarters until we can complete their case files. We are now bringing the machines here," Andry said.

The arrest, somehow, confirmed public suspicion that gambling, which city police claimed to have been wiped out, was still thriving in the capital.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani had vowed to crack down on gambling in the city and to fire precinct and subprecinct police chiefs if there were reports of gambling dens in their respective areas after the one-week deadline.

Despite Monday's arrest, Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Sukrawardi Dahlan will still keep his post.

National Police chief Gen. Sutanto announced a one-week deadline on July 11 for provincial police chiefs to eradicate gambling in their respective areas.

Firman Gani quickly ordered his top officers, precinct, and subprecinct chiefs to wipe out all gambling in the capital within three days, with the threat that failure would result in losing their posts.

More than 500 gamblers and gambling den owners were immediately arrested and thousands of gambling machines were confiscated after Gani's pledge.

However, many people doubt that the police were serious in eliminating gambling as it is public knowledge that many high ranking police officers receive monthly payments from big gambling bosses and lower-ranking officers also got a lot of additional income from street gambling including togel (illegal lottery).

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday that they had not received a single case file on gambling from either the Jakarta or national police headquarters.

Jakarta Prosecutor's Office deputy head on intelligence Farried Haryanto said he has reviewed all case files submitted to his office and found none on gambling.

"There are many case files received from the police but none of them are on gambling," Farried told The Jakarta Post.

He said that his office should have received many gambling case files as police have arrested many alleged gamblers over the past two months.

"Most arrested gamblers or gambling operators were caught red-handed. So, it should be easy and quick to complete the case files," he said.

Earlier, an officer at city police headquarters said that some police officers had released many alleged gamblers for cash.

Just like to share my experience during my last trip to JKT.....

Manage to get a friend to bring me to check out the clubbing scene in JKT. He pick me up around 11pm we reach Nu China (in Kemang area) around 1130pm. The place is kindof pack and not easy to get a picking lot. The drinks there are cheap (ard 30,000 rp) but the place is mostly filled with locals. The crowd there are young as well. After getting some drinks we decide to change the venue....

The next place is a club called (Dragonfly and pls don't ask me about the location). The place is nicely done and the gals there are much better. The crowd is a mix of local and expat and the gals are friendly too. Did talk to a few of them but we decide to check another place out as the close around 2am. The drinks here are slightly higher then the previous one, ard 60,000 rp.

The last place for the nite was X Lounge and Vertigo at Sermangi Plaza. X Lounge was on the 16th floor and Vertigo was on the 17th floor. Both of them are link to another. The gals here can easily score a 7/10 from me. According to my friend, models like to hang ard here and get pick up.... The drinks here are not cheap as well. One drink is around 90,000 rp.... Did not have the chance to talk to the gals as I was quite tispy at the moment and we reach that around 3am.... The place close ard 4am and I decide to call it a day cos still need to work 4 hrs later.... :o

Overall I still prefer Dragonfly cos the gals are more approachable then Vertigo. Shall go there again if I going to JKT again. :)

Batavia aircraft makes emergency landing

A Batavia Air Boeing 737-200 aircraft made an unscheduled landing at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang en route to Batam on Thursday, but all 113 people on board were unharmed, Antara reported.

The incident comes just four days after another Boeing 737-200 belonging to Mandala Airlines slammed into a crowded residential area in Medan, and two days after a Garuda Indonesia and another Mandala plane aborted landings in Riau and Jakarta respectively.

The Batavia Air representative in Palembang, Venny Pontoh, said the plane landed in Palembang at 11 a.m. for minor repairs to its air-conditioning system.

"For the sake of passenger comfort, the pilot decided to make a stop in Palembang," Venny said, denying that the unscheduled landing had been precipitated by an emergency.

The flight was a direct Jakarta to Batam service.

Batavia Air sent a replacement plane to fly all but one of the passengers to Batam a couple of hours later.

The one passenger left behind refused to continue the flight, saying he was frightened by the plane crash in Medan, which killed over 140 people on board the doomed aircraft and on the ground.

"The flight attendants announced the unscheduled landing, but did not say why," the passenger, who identified himself as Agus, told reporters.

After repairs were effected, the plane flew back to Jakarta, carrying passengers bound for the capital.

A member of the House of Representatives conveyed the news of the unscheduled landing to Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa during a hearing in Jakarta.

Air passengers who are annoyed at being asked to provide their identity cards in random ticket checks should realize the process is for their own good, airlines and the transportation minister say.

The importance of ticket checking became clear following Monday's Mandala Airlines plane crash in Medan, North Sumatra, which killed 149 people.

The names of three ill-fated Mandala passengers were missing from the passenger list, causing extra trauma to their bereaved families and meaning insurers were not required to pay out any compensation for their deaths.

The three had purchased their tickets from scalpers.

Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa said on Thursday the government would issue a decree requiring air crews to conduct double checks on passenger tickets before boarding.

"It may be annoying but it should be a must. This is to avoid any chaos (like in the Mandala crash) from reoccurring," Hatta told the House of Representatives Commission V on transportation and telecommunication.

Hatta, who was asked many tough questions at the hearing, said the checks would be made when passengers were checking in and boarding.

Garuda spokesman Pudjobroto, meanwhile, said identity spot checks were a standard safety procedure the national flag carrier had to comply with. However, he did not believe complete double checks of passengers would be feasible.

"Garuda conducts random checks for efficiency at the check-in counters. We've made public this a policy for a long time, so it will be the passengers' responsibility if they still insist on using tickets without their proper names," Pudjobroto said on Thursday.

If passengers were caught with incorrect tickets, Pudjobroto said, they would be required to buy new ones.

"But if he or she manages to get into the plane, we take no responsibility if something bad happens. We only take care of those whose names are on our list," Pudjobroto said.

The check, he added, was also crucial to ensure the safety of the passengers by stopping terrorists or hijackers from getting on board.

However, double checks of every passenger would be difficult because of the time constraints airlines were under. If instituted they would only cause more delays, he said.

"But the message is clear: That passengers know the procedural consequences if their names don't appear."

Merpati Indonesia corporate secretary Jaka Pujiyono said no insurance companies would pay compensation to holders of scalped tickets.

The logic, he said, was that the insurance was sold to the person whose name was on the ticket. "So if it's not your name, and something happens to you, it's not the insurance firm's responsibility."

Jaka said Merpati often conducted full checks on all passengers at certain times but would not elaborate for security reasons.

"We don't want the passengers to know our schedule (of full checks), so they can cheat us. But the message is that they should always be prepared. That's also why passengers are always told to check in an hour before departure. So if we make checks, it won't cause any disruptions," Jaka said.

At the commission hearing, Hatta also said the ministry would start carrying out special inspections and evaluations of all Boeing 737-200 aircraft on Friday.

"Most local carriers operate this type of aircraft and they have the highest accident rates. The evaluations will just be ramp checks (spot checks at the airport) and we will not ground all of the planes."

City braces for new smoking regulations

Owners of enclosed buildings will soon be required to physically separate smoking places from non-smoking areas and must equip smoking rooms with exhaust fans, ash trays and warnings on the dangers of smoking to health, a gubernatorial regulation states.

Smoking is strongly linked to the development of conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and infertility.

Gubernatorial regulation No. 72, dated June 20, 2005, was issued as an implementing regulation of bylaw No. 2/2005 on air pollution control, which will come into effect in February 2006.

Under the bylaw, owners of enclosed buildings and other public places that fail to comply with the regulation will be fined up to Rp 50 million (US$4,850) or jailed for up to six months.

The regulations are mostly addressed at those responsible for smoke-free zones -- owners of buildings, offices, schools, houses of worship and drivers of public transportation vehicles.

Also included on the list of public places are offices -- both government and private -- bus terminals, train stations, malls, airports, shopping centers, hotels and restaurants.

Public transportation vehicles, meanwhile, include trains, taxis, buses, busway, public minivans and kancil.

According to the head of the City's clean air campaign Yusiono Anwar Supalal, building owners, for example, may declare entire buildings as smoke-free places or they may designate special smoking places within their buildings.

The regulation also requires people responsible for public places to follow up on any complaints on violations of the smoke-free zones in their respective areas.

Heads of work places are required to give warnings to employees who violate no smoking zones.

Meanwhile, drivers of public transportation vehicles are also required to warn smoking passengers, but passengers may report smoking drivers to officials of the City Transportation Agency, who are required to take measures against such drivers.

Bylaw No. 2/2005 on air pollution control was approved by the City Council in early February and will be put into effect in mid February next year.

The bylaw also emphasizes the importance of curbing vehicular emissions, which contribute to over 70 percent of Jakarta's air pollution.

The ruling includes requirements for all public vehicles to convert to using natural gas, as well as compulsory emission tests for all vehicles.

According to Article 40 of Bylaw No. 2/2005, civil servant investigators, in cooperation with City Police, will carry out investigations against those who violate smoke-free zones.

Executives of several building management companies said on Wednesday that they had not received any information about the new regulations, but said that they had no problem in banning smoking in public spaces in their building.

Maintenance manager of PT Sarinah on Jl. M. H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta Suhodo, for example, said that the most important thing was that the administration was consistent in enforcing the regulation.

"For us, there is no problem, but we hope that the enforcement would be carried out fairly in all buildings in the city. If we implement a smoking ban, while others do not, our mall will have no visitors or tenants," he said.

Dear Brothers,

I met up with the guy Resky at Plaza Indonesia Starbuck Coffee House after much hassled. After I have chosen from the photos, he sent me, I contacted him via the phone number from Bro Rainman and arranged to met at the above place.

I left early and was there at 5pm and waited until 7pm before the asshole turned-up. Well I wasn't really wasting my time there,afterall I had nothing to do and I was also really fun watching all the beautiful ceweks passing by.

Resky, a relatively handsome young man in jeans, who also spoke good english and probably in his mid twenties, relatively well built, about 1.68m, arrived. We chatted for awhile and he invited me to the carpark to view the girls.

Two young indonesian girls appeared shyly from a kijang and I noticed at once that they are not the one I had "ordered". I refused to accept any of the girls and rejected them outright. I told him that these were not the ones I wanted and he had wasted my time. He kept insisting that the girls were beautiful and I should take one of them. I continued with my refusal and soon another guy joined in the conversation. I told the new guy that I had been "cheated" of my time and was very unhappy with tonite's arrangement. I told them that they were not professionals and why provided photographs for clients to choose and then can't deliver. Anyway the other guy can't speak english, fortunately my bahasa was so so and we managed a good conversation. He agreed with me that clients should not be denied the girl they have ordered. Turning to Resky, after giving him a good "chewing", they left promising to get back to me with the girl I wanted. They called 20mins later and told me that the girl was busy tonite and will arrange the next time again.

BTW, the 2 girls he brought with him were below par and sort of kampong standard. I won't pay even 500 000 rups for any of them. But I must admit they are young and have nice body. One of them is also a half chinese and this one was so shy that she at first refused to come out from the kijang for my viewing. Only after some persuasion then, she shyly stepped off the car.I would probably have accepted her if the price is one million but for 2 million, I can have much better choices.

After the whole debacle, I called a fellow bro and we ended up spending some time in Classics bunker watching the sexy dancing. One of the dancers, the taller of the 3 is a real syt.
