View Full Version : Joo Chiat Hotels To Be Banned From Hourly Rate from 1 Jan 09

FROM Jan 1 next year, all hotels in the Joo Chiat Road area will be banned from offering hourly rates in a bid to crack down on sleaze in the heritage area.

The ruling requires hotel operators to let rooms at full-day rates. It will apply to the nine hotels there now and any new hotels opened in the area.

The Joo Chiat area boasts several Peranakan restaurants, many conserved shophouses and a notorious 50m stretch of Joo Chiat Road noted for prostitution.

This is bad news for us samsters and the hoteliers there. :( Any comments ?

Furthermore JC is a good & quiet place nobody will know what you are doing there :D

Overnight room rates there might drop in that area... the whole area will definitely be more quiet.

I reckon the Hotel Operator will increase the price for short time elsewhere to cover teh loss over at Joo Chiat. The rest will also increase simply because supply & demand.

I guess what the Hotel Operators can consider is either lowering their Overnite rates tremendously, or maybe introduced a new check-in rates/policy - to repay the 'Kindness' of supportive Customers, you pay the full overnite rate upon check-in, and get a 'Rebate' for checking out just after 2 hours .....and in the end....sums up to be the same as a 2 hours transit.....:D

Well the Garment can always come out with their Regulations, Hotel Operators can gave their Rebates to reward Loyal Customers mah.....

i am sure the hotel operators will have to find a way to work around this regulation. maybe the regulations will lifted when business drop too much, lik when they imposed this on gl. hotel businees drop, staff told to go worst right

i woudlnt be interested in jc if not for the tn. it has nothing worth mentioning there....i think residents gave heritage reasons...did something great happen there?...i studied history in sec school but dont remember jc being mentioned.

The hotel operators can probably do the following in my own opinion since sex business has never failed in the history of man kind. It's how creative and flexible u can be in surviving in harsh situations.

- membership (U pay for example $100 upfront for 1st check-in but let you use 2hrs for 4 times valid for a month or so)
- offer discounts to OKT discreetly to book a couple of rooms to be shared among the gals. The rms can be utilised in a round robin way.

Anyway, hotel consumers in that area will have the bargaining power. Could be good news in any case. Let's wait and see. :)

fark e gahmen!

thought they never like to listen to small fries?

anyway this will be temporary only as soon as the casinos, erm, sorry IRs come up they will ease this as this is also near marina bay mah

jc near prata man's house so he have to step in to make sure his property will not drop to worthless mah

gahmen never listens to anyone unless one of their own is affected then they will take some action

well our mr chua (hotel 81) will be most affected as he has opened 3 hotels there as compared to fragrance which i believe only has 1 hotel there

Bro Murali

You are absolutely right on this. The government backed down because of the "pressure group" which wanted Joo Chiat to be "cleaned up" because the residents there need to raise families. So, it would appear that Joo Chiat is the only place in Singapore where people want to raise families. In that pressure group, there is a guy by the name of Colin Chee. As far as I know, he used to worked in the media industry so he is very good at using the press to push this point. He wrote an article in the TODAY newspaper about 2 weeks ago and he (and his friends) like to stay up late to take photographs of the "night life" and they would send them to the government. They basically send out e-mails to a lot of government departments on frequent basis. Faced with that, the government had to do something and the transit rate abolishment (from what I know) was proposed by the grassroots leaders of Joo Chiat who were tasked to look into it. The idea was to move the "sleaze" down to Geylang where it belongs.

I think there is more than 3. We have 81 classic, sakura, joo chiat, tri-star and Opera. They are going to be affected the most in that area.

other way could be if housekeeping would be willing to change bedsheets n towels every 2 hrs lor

hi bros

i was thinking since we can't book hourly rate.. may be the FLs can book the room for whole day and we the customers go to them.

of course, those standing around the joo chiat will be badly hit but those FLs that we frequented or recommended by brothers here may not be.

just my 2 cents worth of thoughts.

A solution has been found. But it is only for the Fragrance Chains.

All "members" are eligible for "Time Share". Selected hotels in the Fragrance Group will be put into the Time Share Programme. The Hotel at JC will be operated as a Time Share Resort!.

Other than Geylang,
maybe we'll see new hotels popping up near the vicinity outside Joo Chiat?
(Eg, Katong, Eunos, East Coast Road etc?)

Unfortunately, Geylang was already sleazy before Singapore (as an independent country) was born ... just like Keong Saik, Flanders Square, etc.
In contrast, Joo Chiat & its sleaze is a recent phenomenon ...

Whatever the case, I also super upset ... coz my favourite H81 is also there leh. Shit!!

that's very good news! it's such an easy way out and to think our gahmen needs to hire millionaire scholars to do the job?

screw colin chee! his property there will always be in a shitty state at the end of the day as long as H81 and Fragrance are still there!

Regulation can be enforced, but worse is when everything go underground. If everything underground, how to enforce? At least, the transit hotel can put poster to warn people to practise safe sex. Underground sex trade cannot even encourage those people to practise safe sex. More risk and dangers.

Since there is so much demand for sex, garment should just open up another place for sleaze. Easier too. :D Going to GL sometimes so mah fan, difficult to find parking somemore.

Maybe they should re-consider the idea, i think it still veri hard for them to bring down the sleazy at that area.

perhaps JC's lost may be Balestier's, Kovan's & pasir panjang's gain ...... there are already a few 81s and fragrances around these areas .....

so next year, such "activities" can be evenly distributed :D

You damn right bro. As it is, Geylang is a huge grey area with everything under the sun going on there. Also too many kapos complain already about JC , so they gonna throw in all the rubbish in one place, namely GL.

Silver lining could be that the Viet fls prices might be going down soon. Lets see.

solution to bros who run hotels

(a) put up daily rates, say $100 for a day stay, but can't help it if customers choose for early checkout, right? when they do that, refund.

(b) charge extremely low daily rates, say $30, law din say cannot charge too low, right? but unwritten condition is customers must check out early

:)

But sian leh...u restrict one area...meaning those high profile area will be more crowded....and easily bump into ppl we know le....hai~

Now I Worry CT will be affected too...

But abit like not feasible leh

Hotel staff will not known when a customer wants to check out. Some may stay for 3 hrs...some longer or shorter...if that's the case, hotel rm will always be full...

In that case, organize a mass migration to LOS, HCM, BT or other less restricted countries lor. Water too clean fish also cannot survive what.
In any case, economy so bad and Garment cannot do anything about it, soon we also have to go to these countries to clean the toilets and sweep the roads. Although earn less but cost of cheonging also lower. Can still enjoy life.
